It’s about time that building and land were put to good use. Hope you get it sorted Davood.

I hope Labour Councillors and their Party supporters note that here is yet another example of a windfall site, not in Harlow Council's Local Plan. A building and piece of land which has laid empty for many years which can be brought back into good use, meaning that at least one of the playing and or green spaces in Harlow's Local Plan could be taken off the list.

Did the old man not own the old Odeon site, guess that will be next or is it easier for the family to do it as he had quite a spat with the council and iirc was it about a lap dancing club although i stand to be corrected.

You are not wrong Jarrett. Mo does own the Odeon site. Rumour has it that because he wasn’t allowed to have his lap dancing club there he is letting the building stand empty until it falls down naturally. I stand to be corrected if rumour is wrong.

Such a waste, big enough for a live music venue to replace The Square and to hold other events. It could provide a be a wonderful venue, bringing people into the town centre in the evenings. Whatever beef the owner has with the Council it is a shame he cannot see beyond that and provide a first class venue for the people of Harlow and beyond

Happy to confirm whilst I was the cabinet member for regeneration I meet this local family business and was impressed with there vision and aspirations. The family do own several sites and have expressed interest in developing them at some stage. Sadly the old cinema site isn’t fit for much and in such a state it wouldn’t be worth investing in to make it a music venue. The council will work with any land owner to bring real change and extra value to the whole Harlow community. We need to work with developers not ignore them. Together we can make a difference. There is no beef with anyone and the relationship with this local family run business is excellent. They are a credit to their family

Thanks for the link to the photos, it will certainly help with ongoing Police investigations. The article is about the Netteswell Hall land yet most of the comments refer to the Odeon. To be clear, on multiple occasions I have personally endeavoured to contact management at The Square to discuss the possibility of making the Odeon its new home. Most recently was in February this year when I was approached by the Harvey Centre management and asked by them to contact a senior member of The Square. My calls weren’t answered, I assume my voicemails weren’t taken notice of and I think I received one text message from them saying they would call me, but they never did. It wouldn’t have been easy for The Square to move in, logistically and certainly financially. I had been willing to assist them wherever possible, so it is a shame they did not take my invite to discuss seriously. Things are finally moving forward for the better of Harlow, it is a shame some people can’t see that.

Joe, I take my hat off to you for making approaches regarding the Square going to the Odeon and a pity nothing came of it but perhaps the management were just not interested although i would have thought if they had bothered to try and get the message out they may have found backers for the possible move to the Odeon.

Joe - it is indeed a good thing that there is this type of development in Harlow, and land such as Netteswell is bought back into good, meaningful use. I believe all these developments show that Harlow really is beginning to become a up and coming place to invest and that can only benefit everyone. So more power to you and the family. I think people's concerns over the Odeon are justified; I'm not saying efforts aren't being made, it's just that from the outside where people aren't involved in the process, it appears nothing is being done with the place. It's a shame that for whatever reason the square couldn't move in, as it'd be such a perfect fit. Is there anything else that you guys could do with the place? Bouce Trampoline park? Events venue with comedy nights and such, 2nd theatre for town, something like Puttshack (just spitballing ideas). Either way, hope the place gets bought back to life soon, and keep up developments like Netteswell.

So happy to hear this, we lived in Amberry Court until recently and walked past every day thinking what a waste of land. How do we find out about buying one please? Perfect location for us and keen to get first dibs before out-of-towners buy them up to sell on!

Hi Joe, the Square as a business was dissolved in 2018. Im not sure who you have been trying to contact with regards to a senior manager, or whose phone number you were provided, and it would be a shame if whoever you have been reaching out to hasn’t passed on the contact details of other relevant people. I’m currently working with Harlow Museum on an exhibition of The Square but also run live music events (not as often recently due to the pandemic) in and around Harlow so happy to discuss and explore any options for a more permanent home for live music in Harlow. Sorry just seen the date on this article - someone sent it to me so assumed it new. Previous comment still stands.

I was involved in the running of the Square as an ECC youth service member. ECC really didn't give a damn, it was all about Money.. Disliked the staff, who cared about the community & saw them as a hindrance to their omnipotent authority.

Dom - we should be clearer about when you had those difficulties when working at The Square. You are referring to the period prior to us taking over, when it was run by Essex County Council of course. I know it certainly wasn't during the 10 years between 2008/18 that the SquareOne partners ran it. That ECC period was also when Joe Ghadami made the only approach as I recall. I was also employed by The Square as Technical Manager in those days and I paid a couple of visits to the Paradise Lodge to discuss how that building might be used, if ECC went ahead with their plans to close The Square. As it happened, nothing more came of that and eventually, we formed our own company and took over from ECC without the need for closure. When the Circle/Clarion Property Developers finally shut us down, we were not in discussion with anyone other than HDC about potential replacement venues. Unfortunately, non of the options we looked at with them, or with other landlords in the Town Centre over the course of our search, were viable without the funding we were promised and then denied by the Developers, Circle Housing.
