Harlow councillors clash over increase in allowances

THERE was a bitter war of words between Labour and Conservative councillors over an increase in councillor allowances.

Conservative councillors argued that the increase would be viewed in a dim light an=s it came when council tax was being increased.

Labour councillors such as Cllr Stefan Mullard voted for the allowance but pledged to donate the increase to local charities, Streets2Homes and the PAH Dolphin Ward.

This is proof that the likes of Cllr Millard along with the rest of the Labour Harlow administrating party councillors are only in it for themshelves and not the number one priority, which is the residents of Harlow.
This is pure greed and totally selfish in my opinion.
The residents of Harlow are seeing services such as the libraries being closed down, shops in the town centre going out of business, increased council tax which is suppose to be paying to keep this services going but obviously it’s not, it’s going straight into the pockets of Labour councillors who are never around to be seen or heard only when it suits them such as on a build up to elections and even then they going around intimidating the residents of Harlow and giving out fulse information about opposition party candidates.
Councillors should be paid on performance and not attendance, if this was in place the majority of the Harlow Labour party councillors will be skint.

Hahaha! once this budget was passed by the Labour Group, of course the Tories were going to ‘oppose it’. They knew it would pass.

As a former Councillor Mr Long, I would have thought you would know the distinction between ECC run services and Harlow Council run services.

For example. Libraries. ECC run. Not Harlow Council.

I see Costanza you continue to hide behind your monicker and not state who you are! I also notice you pick on the Libraries and ignore the disappearing shops, rising Council tax and allowance rises! If you seriously think the people of Harlow care whose to blame – Harlow Labour or Essex Tories – then you are even more out of touch than I thought! They want solutions not playground bunfights! That’s why residents are looking at the Common sense ideas of HAP and UKIP, because the old pair of tired old parties have let them down!

It’s both disappointing and untrue that councillors are only in it for themselves as quoted by D.P.l.
Whilst am not sure was “in it” refers to I can assure you that all councillors work hard both in the council chamber as well as supporting local residents.
Many of us never would or should promote this type of work but we deal with this issues as it part of the role.
One councillor made a excellent suggestion that all allowances should be fixed at a national level.
UK Maverick785 does make a serious point that actually people don’t want the blame game attitude but a collective approach to find solutions and opportunities.
We’re all very proud of being councillors regardless of political difference,we all just want to get the best for Harlow.
My guess is most people won’t know what councillors receive as allowances but most would be surprised how little it is compared to others.
Lets get on with the job about making a collective difference.
    Many thanks.
