Still time to enter the St Clare Hospice 10K

ST Clare Hospice’s annual sporting event, the St Clare 10k, is fast approaching – on Sunday 7th April – but there is still time to sign up before advance registration closes on Monday 1st April. Those who miss this deadline needn’t worry; they can still register on the morning of the event.

This popular annual sporting event, which is a regular fixture in local running club calendars, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. New for this year, Harlow Running Club are providing pacers for the race, so that runners can achieve their very best times!

The first ever St Clare 10k took place in 1994, and was organised by Liz Jones and her son Matthew. The route that first year was different to the one which has always subsequently been used as it was changed in order to avoid possible traffic hazards.

Liz said: “The event always marks the beginning of spring for me, as the route which my son devised in 1995 is still the same today; there are daffodils in the hedgerows and gardens, new leaves on the trees, and the sound of birds singing, the swish of the wheels of the lead biker and the amazingly fast and light wheelchairs, followed by the thud of hundreds of running shoes and trainers on the roadway!”

This year is no different; hundreds of runners are expected to lace up their running shoes and tackle the 10k route on the roads of Hastingwood through the beautiful Essex countryside.

Starting and finishing at the Hospice, this event is suitable for all abilities – whether new to running, or a regular club runner looking for a new Personal Best. The course is also suitable for wheelchair athletes. Last year, this popular event attracted 320 runners and raised more than £14,000 for the Hospice – a target which St Clare is hoping to beat this year!

St Clare Challenges and Events Fundraiser, Emma Broadbent, is organising this year’s event. She said: “We’ve already seen a huge amount of interest in our 10k race this year, with record number of entries by this time of the year. It’s easy to see why our race is a popular choice for local runners, with beautiful views enroute. Not only that, but our route along the roads of Hastingwood is UK Athletics affiliated and chip-timed – so it offers the perfect opportunity to get a new PB at the start of the running season.”

Emma continued: “Many of our local running clubs participate in force each year – with big teams from Harlow Running Club, Bishop’s Stortford Running Club, Ware Joggers and Saffron Striders taking part in 2018. Last year’s winner, Robert Windard, from Lincoln and District Runners, completed the race in a very competitive time of 34 mins 10 secs, which we are hoping can be matched this year.”

The road race is UK Athletics affiliated and chip-timed with trophies up for grabs in the following categories: male, female, seniors, juniors and wheelchair athletes. Medals will be awarded to all runners.

Advanced registration costs £12 or £15 on the day (£10 or £13 for affiliated runners). The deadline for advanced sign-ups is Monday, 1st April. The registration desk will be open at 9:30am on the day, with the race starting at 10:30am. The event is open to people aged 15 and above.

The race starts and finishes at St Clare Hospice, Hastingwood Road, Hastingwood, Essex, CM17 9JX.
