Judo: Harlow Judo players shine at international competition

Sport / Wed 22nd May 2019 am31 08:52am

FOUR players represented Harlow Judo Club in the 2019 London Area Open, held at UEL, Docklands.

With a packed arena, this high level event attracted players of all levels from all over the UK, Ireland, Netherlands and Spain, and was spread over 4 mats. The standard of Judo was therefore going to be high and everyone who attended, was not disappointed.

Two of the Club’s players competed in the Minors category (group 1) (years 2007-2011) and 2 fought in group 2 being the Pre-Cadets category (years 2005-2006).

In group 1, (Minors) first up was Millie Morgan (10) in her weight group. Having recently graded to 4th mon (yellow belt), she gave everything she had. Winning every round, she was in with a chance to claim the Club’s first Gold medal, however an error cost her the win and she had to settle for a Silver medal. Last up for the Club in the Minors category was Eli Balski (9). Like Millie, Eli also recently graded to 4th mon (yellow belt). This was a very popular weight category so competition was already going to be tough for him. Having tried hard, his inexperience at this level meant that he was out of the competition having lost 2 fights, which did not allow him to make it into the repecharge and went home empty handed.

Group 2 was the Pre-Cadets section. Owen Lambert (13) and George Franks (12) were the last 2 competitors for Harlow Judo Club. It was already a long day for both having weighed in early in the morning, were not called to fight until early afternoon. As chance would have it, they were both called at similar times. Luckily there were 2 coaches on hand, Head Coach, Mick Ellis, and Assistant Head Coach, Glen Williams to assist the boys.

First on to the mat was Owen, coached by Glen. Moving up to a new weight category, it was going to be more of a challenge with new competition to encounter. Un-phased, Owen dominated and embraced his new group with 3 excellent wins to take the Club’s only Gold medal with superb techniques and mature judo.

George, coached by Mick, had a longer wait as there were other weight groups combined on his mat but kept his cool to win his early rounds and also make it the semi-finals, however, his opponent proved too difficult and he had to settle for a Silver medal.

Coach Mick Ellis said “I am very pleased with the team’s overall performance today – they all fought really well and did their best, which is what I ask of them”.
