ON any given Thursday night, the chances are you’ll share Harlow’s pavements and cycle tracks with runners belonging to the town’s 30-year-old flagship club.
Or you might be a regular parkrunner at the Town Park course inspired by the team spirit dozens of Harlow Running and Tri Club members show each Saturday morning rain or shine.
Harlow Running Club has its roots in the emerging popularity of the sport in the 1980s, originally based at the former sport centre before moving to Mark Hall Sports Centre in 2006 with a new track and facilities.
What many residents might not know is that it also includes a triathlon sub-group and has an approach to inclusive training which focuses on supporting people at any stage of their running life.
Chairperson Paul Schroder says of running: “Everyone knows it is a great way to get into shape, but it also can benefit almost every part of your body and lift your mood.
“We know a lot of local people want to run safely as part of a sociable group, and Harlow Running Club helps with that by offering support and advice for your training.”
Club members have three choices of coached training and running every week, as well as organised long weekend runs and even bike rides to include cross training!
Harlow Running Club also organises two 12-week novice courses throughout the year, says Paul: “One started on 10th September 2019 and another one is in February 2020; they have become very popular and it is where we have recruited many new members.”
Harlow Tri Club meanwhile helps nurture, inspire and advise each other on triathlon journeys, offering coached swimming sessions and open water swimming. It can prepare even the most novice athlete from couch to endurance event!
Paul adds: “A big thank you to all of our members in this anniversary year; people make the club what it is, and we’ve become more inclusive and focused than ever thanks to everyone’s commitment. Here’s to another year of welcoming great new people!”
