Creator of the Lions Head in The Water Gardens has died

THE SCULPTOR whose work adorns various parts of the town centre has died.

Walter Mitchell was 95 when he passed away after a short illness.

Thousands of Harlow residents and visitors will have seen his work. Some will have stopped and admired the work,, many have traveled from around the country if not the world to see William Mitchell work in its natural environment.

The three works in Harlow were all originally installed in 1963 in the Water Gardens and on the old town hall.

They are the Seven Reliefs in The Water Gardens; the Relief no opposite JD Sports and the Heraldic Panel that was originally on the old town hall that is now at the side of Asda.

Below is a blog detailing the history of his work.
