THE Indoor League season at HECC has virtually drawn to a close with success for both sides associated with Harlow CC.
By Andy Yeats
In Division One the Harlow CC side finished the league season in second place losing out to the unbeaten Sawbridgeworth CC side. With all the sides in that division, bar HECC Academy, fielding teams full of First & Second XI players it was a tough ask for our young side who never fielded less than four 17 year olds or younger in their match day team of six players. Ben Yeats and Callum Sykes led the way with the bat, with Ben second highest scorer in the league and Callum fourth highest. However, special praise must go to the bowling unit who developed superbly during the winter. Seamers, Matt Hart, Paddy Matthews, Abdullah & Amir Farooq, Myles Baldock and Callum consistently bowled a tight, just outside off stump, lines to restrict the opposition enabling several tight victories.
The side were hampered by long term injury to their leading spinner, Nathan McCarthy, who has always proved a handful indoors with his loop and bounce. Sadly, a damaged finger from the outdoor season prevented him from bowling but he contributed hugely with the bat often unselfishly losing his wicket pushing to maintain his noteworthy strike rate.
Additional praise must also go to Andre Riddell who was clearly the outstanding wicket keeper in the entire league and his contribution was also felt in the dressing room as he used his coaching experience to excellent effect with his young teammates.
Next weekend this side play in the Essex Indoor County Finals, facing Belhus CC in their semi final – Harlow having finished the top side from the West Essex area.
Harlow’s ‘other’ indoor team arguably had even greater success in Division Two. Playing under the guise of Royston Vasey they won their division and achieved promotion thereby joining the Harlow side in the top league next winter. Callum Sykes led there way with bat and ball but fully supported by teammates Amir Farooq, Abdullah Farooq, Tyler Dobson, Ronnie Fuller, Ben Terrington, Jack Sykes and Asad Baig.
Vasey managed to win nine of their twelve league games and defeated third place Thorley CC to clinch the title.
