IN a letter to Robert Halfon MP, the Minister for the School System confirmed that “a new special free school” will be established in Harlow. The letter explains that “the new free school will help to provide a greater number of good specialist places for children, often vulnerable and disadvantaged”, offering support for children and young people with complex needs.

The Beckmead Trust has been selected by the Education Secretary to work with Robert Halfon MP and Essex County Council to set up the school. The Harlow school is due to open in 2022, off Tendring Road.

Mr Halfon has strongly welcomed this exciting announcement for Harlow families, saying: “I am thrilled that Harlow has been chosen by the Education Secretary for a brand new specialist free school. I’ve been working hard in Parliament to draw in more money for Harlow schools and champion support for pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs in Harlow.

“My Education Select Committee, which I chair, led an 18-month inquiry into the state of SEN provision – one of the biggest inquiries by a House of Commons Committee ever conducted – during which we highlighted the need for every single pupil with complex needs to receive a high quality school place.

“This brand new school will transform specialist education in Harlow, offering places for 90 pupils aged 7 to 19 who have severe and complex SEMH issues in Harlow. It will ensure that these children and their families receive the support they need to climb the education ladder of opportunity. I look forward to working closely with Essex County Council and the Beckmead Trust to bring these plans to fruition.”
