Biblical Rain Brings Early End to the Action
By Andy Yeats
PROLONGED overnight rain that continued into the morning hours was enough to see all our home fixtures wiped out several hours before the scheduled start.
However, the cricketing patrons of Rainham and Upminster weren’t deterred by several inches of rain and our First and Fourth XI fixtures both started on time as all concerned kept their fingers crossed that the afternoon forecast might be wrong.
Certainly, at Rainham the wicket was badly affected by the conditions and batting was always going to be a major difficulty on a strip that had variable wear as well as degrees of dampness. About time for a rare Sykes winning of the toss but alas no not to be and out stepped possibly the youngest opening First XI partnership in club history as 14 year old James Forde partnered 17 year old Ben Yeats.
Around two hours later the gathering dark clouds dropped their deposit of huge quantities of further rain and that was that but not before our batsmen had been given a stern test in horrible batting conditions as we scrapped our way to 91-7. Yeats top scored with 20, whilst Andre Riddell (17*) and Callum Sykes (15) made contributions. I believe the general feeling was that 130 might be competitive and 150 very defendable so the score might not be any where near as catastrophic as it first appears.
News of the 4th XI fixture at Upminster 5’s was a little less detailed but our side were batting first and making a very good fist of things scoring over 200 when the rain came. 13 year old Joe Radford reportedly batted extremely well making around 40 but a more detailed update will be added when available. Sadly, this was our fifth and final fixture to fall to the weather before the mid innings break.
Five weeks into the season and already two wash out weekends. 2020 the year that just keeps giving……..
