Harlow Council leader thanks Harlow cycling groups as Essex Council make pledge to improve cycle tracks

HARLOW Council leader Mark Ingall expressed his thanks for the campaigning by Harlow cyclists and other cycle track users that has resulted in Essex County Council agreeing to speed up repairs to Harlow’s cycle tracks.

Councillor Ingall said “ It has been a privilege to join with users of Harlow’s cycle tracks to pressure Essex County Council to make these long overdue repairs. Recently I committed Harlow District Council to spend £50,000 on repairs to the ten percent of the cycle track that we are responsible for. If Essex had matched our spend per mile, they should have committed £450,000, they haven’t but the £200,000 they have announced today is a great start. The town must thank local activists, Yasmin Gregory, Vice Chair of Harlow Cyccling Club and Peter Spring of the Harlow Cycling Group for their efforts in raising awareness of the problems.

“Harlow’s cycle tracks are a great legacy of Sir Frederick Gibberd’s vision for Harlow. For far too long they have been allowed by Essex County Council to fall into disrepair. This good news is long overdue, but Essex must now commit to a proper schedule of maintenance so that our cycle tracks never again become so neglected.”.
