Busy weekend for Harlow Athletics Club

Athletics / Mon 26th Apr 2021 at 04:28pm

HARLOW Athletic Club members were out at two events on Sunday 25 April. Shemar Boldizsar competed at Loughborough, and a further ten athletes competed at Lee Valley. Boldizsar was due to take part in both the 100m and 200m but soreness in his hamstring prevented him from taking part in the 200m. Strong headwinds all day meant that conditions were not conducive to fast times. He qualified for the final from his heat in 11.05s and finished fifth in the final, easing down, in 11.39s.

The majority of Harlow’s competitors took part at an Open event at Lee Valley. The format saw athletes take part in a series of graded races. Like at Loughborough, conditions were not ideal and a swirling wind had races with both strong headwinds and unduly helpful tailwinds.

Tori Brotherton-Manahan, U15, took part in Race 3, the highest seeded 100m race for a Harlow female athlete. She was seventh in a time of 14.09s racing against some older athletes. Summer Toppin, U15, was next in Race 6. She was fifth in 14.84s. Three from Harlow were involved in Race 7: Bebe Jackson was second in 14.54s. She is classed as T44 for ambulant athletes and her time is very encouraging indeed, in the last full season of results, 2019, this time would have placed her ninth overall. Two U13 debutants, Holly Austin and Daniella Hill were sixth (14.89s) and seventh (16.04) respectively. The final heat had two Harlow athletes in it. Shelby Patterson (U15) was second in 14.87s and Desa Mile (U13) was fifth in 15.64s.

The Long Jump was split into two pools, one for 4m plus jumpers and one for under 4m, all four Harlow participants were in Pool 2 and all four were very close in distance: Shelby Patterson and Summer Toppin both recorded best jumps of 3.54m and Jake Carter (U13) jumped 3.55m. Bebe Jackson recorded a best of 3.58m.

Next on track for Harlow participants was the 200m. James Petty (U20) was highest ranked and he was in Race 3. He was second in an excellent finish and his time of 22.76s was almost a full second quicker than his previous personal best. Samuel Dawson and Jake Carter were both in Race 7. They finished in fifth – Dawson 28.63s, sixth – Carter 30.75s respectively. Bebe Jackson rounded off an excellent personal day by finishing fifth in Women’s Race 5 in a time of  30.92s.
