Athletics: Darren conquers Lakeland 100 trail

HARLOW Running Club member Darren Coates completed the Lakeland 100 trail race at the weekend, which turned out be a total of 105 miles.
The ‘Ultra Tour of the Lake District’ is the most spectacular long distance trail race which has ever taken place within the UK. The circular route encompasses the whole of the lakeland fells, includes in the region of 6300m of ascent and consists almost entirely of public bridleways and footpaths. Darren put in a monumental effort to finish in 119th place out of 542 finishers in a very exhausting 32hrs 28min 00sec.
Meanwhile, at the Writtle Wround 50k, an Essex Trail Events ultra that visits the scenic villages of Blackmore, Willingale, Good Easter and Pleshey, Sandi Rust finished in 13th place out of 86 finishers and 2nd Female in an fantastic 5.29.51.
Dave Goosetree ran the Bedford 20 Mile race at the Bedford Motor Circuit, finishing in 25th place out of 31 finishers in 3.27.03.
Seven members combined to finish fifth seven person team out of six teams in the Endure 24 Hour race at Henley on Thames. The runners run in relay, each runner runs a 5 mile lap. Janice Page, David Page, Teresa Warren, Steve Warren and Julie Bull each ran four laps and Mick Gleeson and Dean Bull ran 3 laps. The total time ran was 24hrs 01min 44sec for a total of 130 miles.
At the Standard Chartered City 5k, run within the City of London, Dominic Emery finished in 342nd place out of 2145 finishers in a superb PB time of 21min 47sec.
Five three person triathlete teams competed in the Bedford Triathlon Team Relays, each person swims 750m, bike rides 20k and runs 5k. In 50th place out of 114 teams were Alan Cootes, Nick D’Alton and Darren Tiley in a time of 4.38.53. In 52nd place were Louise Kedge, Gail Nichols and Paula Reynolds in 4.39.43. In 68th place were Terri Wiley, Ryan Smith and Josh Shelton in 4.46.41. In 75th place were Iain Bulloch, Kerry Mavris and Chris Donnelly in 4.50.59. In 107th place were Kate Babb, Alison Wilkinson and Julia Gardiner in 5.29.42.
A wet Saturday morning saw the return of parkrun to England for the first time since March 2020. 56 HRC members took part in 12 events including 41 runners at Harlow parkrun. Notable achievements were a PB for Keith Streeter at Harlow and a debut by Tony Russell at Maldon Prom parkrun.
