ON a sunny April afternoon it was a pleasure to travel across to Waltham Abbey’s ground to watch Harlow Town’s reserve team in action against Billericay Town reserves in the final of Essex senior divisional cup.
Despite a positive start from the Hawks it was Billericay who took the lead just after the half hour. Gabriel Ipanga Mbambo finishing for Billericay. Goalkeeper Rob Hawk was unlucky to have the ball hit the post and then rebound back on to him.
However, Harlow Town responded almost immediately, equalising in the 34th minute thanks to a great finish from Marko Protic, assisted by the deserved man of the match Henry Clark. The two teams went in to the dressing room at half time with the score tied at 1-1 and plenty to play for in the second half.
Although Billericay may feel that they had the lions share of possession in the second period it was Harlow who created some of the best chances with Hawks Captain Graeme Butler coming close following a corner. With the game looking as though it was heading to extra time Harlow managed to come up with the winning goal in the 85th minute curtesy of well placed Sammy Bayon strike.
After the game Captain Graeme Butler said ‘These boys don’t give up. We stayed composed, stuck to the game plan and knew we’d come out on top. This is a special special group’
Final score 2-1 and a fantastic cup win for Harlow Town reserves. Lots of potential for the first team on show too!
