New exhibition set to visit Pram Town

‘PRAM Town Revisited’ is the first solo exhibition for award winning filmmaker and photographer Damilola Lemomu. It opens on Saturday 5 November at the Gibberd Gallery, Harlow.
The Harlow we know today resulted from the Town and Country Planning Act of 1946 which sought to build a number of new towns around London to mitigate the housing crisis that took place after the Second World War, when thousands of families lost their homes. Young families made up a large amount of the demographic that moved to Harlow, at one point 20 percent of Harlow’s population was under 5, earning the town the nickname “Pram Town”.
Pram Town Revisited reviews reasons for migration to Harlow over a 75 year period, starting in 1947 when Harlow was designated a New Town. Providing an audiovisual dive into the lives, memories and opinions of various residents the exhibition features archive material, film, photography and oral history recordings along with a commissioned poem by Gboyega Odubanjo. Gboyega is winner of the 2021 Michael Marks Poetry Award. Archive material featured in the exhibition has been sourced with generous support from Essex Record Office and Harlow Museum and Walled Gardens.
Visitors to the exhibition, who have a connection with Harlow, are invited to bring with them a photograph that speaks of their memories of the town. These will be added to a growing display over the length of the show.
