Budget: Harlow council tax bills may be set to soar

News / Thu 17th Nov 2022 at 04:33pm

HARLOW council tax bills may bear set to soar.

The average Band D household will pay £250 a year more in council tax by 2027-28 because of the government decision to allow local authorities to increase it by 5% without referendum.

Harlow’s Council tax bills are divided up into what is called Precepts.

So, the Harlow Conservatives, who run Harlow Council may reduce their share of the council tax for Harlow residents but that may be dwarfed by increases imposed by Essex County Council, Essex Police etc.

The decision has met with a great deal of criticism. We hope to get reaction from local politicians as soon as.

But here are the reactions from a number of politicians across the country.

"The average Band D household will pay £250 a year more in council tax by 2027-28 because of the government decision to allow local authorities to increase it by 5% without referendum." YH, the banner headline said "may", the article says "will". This is a bit misleading from you. I am sure that our tory council will do all they can to keep our council tax as low as possible, sadly I doubt ECC will not (as you have referred to) And don't forget, the failure to do stuff like repair potholes makes the real inflation even higher

A further thought, why have council tax bands not been extended. Why end at band H (google says Buckingham palace is on this band and paying less than Harlow's band D), surely we could have a few more bands to raise additional revenue

Not wanting to be horrible but our town is looking rundown and tired. The council like any organisations responsible for a big amount if money waste a lot of it. Year on year we pay more get less. Because of liz truss the country lost over £30 billions in a short time. Why should it be the poor people have to pay for their mistakes. Its beyond a joke now.

Absolutely disgusting, where the hell do they think we are going to find this money when we are struggling now. People have got to stand up and say no. Seriously what do the councils do now with the money we pay, nothing gets done, roads and town centres are a bloody disgrace and saying they need more money to fix these when all they have done is pissed what we have previously paid down the drain is really not our problem. RICH GET RICHER , the rest of us are not meant to have a life, because we have to keep paying out for the shit they have caused, this has got to stop. So many people are on minimum wage or self employed and can't do this anymore.

Government given this permission to local authorities. This wasn't mentioned in budget Funny that. Pass the buck to councils. I really don't know how people will manage, don't bear thinking about.
