Census: More figures reveal changing landscape of Harlow

News / Wed 30th Nov 2022 at 04:39pm

NEW census figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) give more of a flavour of the social landscape of Harlow.

As we reported last week, close to 1 in 5 residents in Harlow are non-UK born and this may be reflected in the ethnic background as seen below.

It is also interesting to see what faith people ascribe to. Perhaps the fact that over 40,000 people have no religion is also a sign of the times.

I wonder how many of the 608 other religion are Jedi or Satanists!

As far as religion is concerned I believe Thomas Paine, the author of The Rights of Man, makes a good point in his 'Age of Reason' book when he says: "I believe in the equality of man; and I believe that religious duties consist in doing justice, loving mercy, and endeavouring to make our fellow creatures happy." https://www.ushistory.org/Paine/reason/reason1.htm

@David Vincent, Jesus said it first. He said (Luke 6:31): "Do to others as you would have them do to you." In other words, treat people how you would like to be treated. Doing justice, loving mercy and making people happy come under that remit!

You will find in most religions that being nice to each other is a must.

Theman, a pity they don't practice what they preach, there's been centuries of religious wars and it's still happening today.

And for centuries bad people have used religion to get good people to do bad things. It’s the oldest trick in the book, and we all fall for it every time. Does not change the fact that nearly all religions teach compassion and fairness to others. Of course in the west we worship at the alter of dodgy science and statistics to manipulate our population into making bad decisions.
