Councillor Dan Swords elected Leader of Harlow Conservatives

News / Sat 13th May 2023 at 03:55pm

COUNCILLOR Dan Swords has been elected the Leader of the Harlow Conservatives and will shortly become the Leader of Harlow Council. The announcement follows the resignation of Cllr Russell Perrin yesterday.

Commenting on the news, Cllr Swords said: “I would like to pay tribute to Cllr Perrin for the dedication and sacrifice he has made to build an even better Harlow as Leader of the Conservative group and Harlow Council.

“I am truly honoured to have been elected by our fantastic councillors to lead them and lead Harlow Council. This is a significant time for our town and I do not underestimate the job at hand. We must rebuild our town for the next generation and above all else, deliver on the promises we were elected on.

“I will lead for the whole town and deliver on the things that matter most to people. I love this town and I know that our brightest days lie ahead of us.”

"“I will lead for the whole town and deliver on the things that matter most to people." I nearly smiled. Cllr. Swords walked away from all his "important" council duties not so long ago and now well, hypocrisy is alive and well in the council chamber again!

Blow me, that was quicker than when Watford FC change managers! As Leader of the Council we will now be able to hold him to account for the following 1) Harlow will be the best town in Britain, 2) Harlow will have the best cycle track system in the world 3), Harlow will have the best Town Centre in Essex 4) Has he met the Tory candidates pledge that only a vote for the Conservatives will stop development on the Green Belt to the south west of Harlow.

What a laugh. He paid tribute to councillor perrin for helping make harlow a better place. Lol. You have got to be joking? I can hardly walk on the pavements in harlow nowadays due to all the cars and work vans that park on the pavements.Harlow is over populated with far to many homes being built, lots of green spaces being eaten up by all this over building, over populated, the car and van situation is horrendous, the pavements are ruined due to people parking on them. The cycle tracks are no better, they are full of potholes and huge cracks.I can see now that harlow is going to go from bad to worse.

And will he chase ECC regarding the long term potholes they have avoided year after year?

And now we hear that two senior Conservative Councillors have resigned their posts! They were clearly all holding back until after the elections last weeks. Many of those who voted Tory may feel they were hoodwinked.

So a week and a half ago the Conservatives present a united front to the Harlow electorate. No mention of intended resignations then. Now we have the leader and two senior Cabinet members resign. Meanwhile there is an ongoing HTS dispute with workers striking. Houses where the roofs haven't been fixed and a deal supposedly done with Essex County Council to fix the roads where the patching has been appalling. It's Chaos!

Nicholas Any voting for any political party including yours is a fool.

It’s been chaos at the Council since the Conservatives took over.

At 22yrs old what life skills has this man got. There's a major one he changes his mind at will got help Harlow over the next four years. Has the been a show of hands by the other councillors, surely this is not the another Tory stitch up. Is Dan Swords a sleeper for Labour a bit like Sue Gray. Politics is definitely a non informative, lying career. Glad I don't vote anymore.

Adam Taylor, I might suggest that anyone not voting is a fool. When just 25% of the electorate do vote and of them only about half voted Tory, you end up with a Council run by a Party which only 12% voted for. Nothing will change whilst such a low turnout continues.. We take voting for granted whilst just a couple of thousands miles away thousands of people have been killed trying to remain a democratic country. Lets also not forget the struggle undertaken by the suffragettes so that women could vote.

I do not trust this poundshop Boris Johnson. He has carefully copied Johnson's mannerisms both in the clasping of his hands, ruffling of hair, and use of hand gestures throughout every YourHarlow interview. This guy is not at all authentic.

As others have said - what skills and experience does Cllr Swords have besides being Halfon's apprentice? Has he worked in the private sector? If so, to what level? Has he setup his own business? Does he hold any academic credentials?

Nicholas Why would I want to vote to be made poorer, lose freedoms and have insanity like money creation, net zero forced on me. Put a none of the above box on and I agree as it stands I am done voting for the least worse option, they are all parasites, who have done nothing but make life in the UK for most much harder and poorer than it needs to be.

Anyone remember Brian Rix's plays! Looks like there was one last script, now being performed at Harlow Civic Centre by the Conservative party Cllrs, to say it's an amateur production would insult many fine and talented actors, it's a political farce.

Is this article regarding the acts going on inside the circus tent at the town park?

I really don't think age counts, how old was Alexander when he conquered most of the known world or Pitt the younger when he oversaw the act of Union and created the United Kingdom?. Dan is a very able and personable guy, he was once described to me as "a young head on old shoulders". ..... in jest, I imagine his School report read something like..." Daniel is an intelligent and personable student but apt to mix with the wrong sort of crowd to the detriment of the class!"

"We must re build our town for the next generation" really. What about all of us now, dont we matter? Dan swords you say you love this town, well let me tell you, i used to love myhome town harlow, the town where i was born many years ago but i hate it now. Harlow has been welland truly ruined. It has become a joke and it is so overpopulated that its shocking. Harlow Was a great town many years ago but what it has been turned into is heartbreaking.I can see that dan swords is only going to care about his own age group and no one else. Lol. Shameful what has been allowed tohappen to a once beautiful town. Take a good walk around harlow in the evenings Dan. Lol.

David Morton, I'll give you that! I run my own little business and have regular contact with pensioners etc within Bushfair ward and although I haven't had any direct contact with Dan for several months, I have advised my clients to email Dan with their various concerns and have been happily surprised that he has addressed their.issues. Credit given where credit due!

That's all well and good Neil but residents should not have to run along to their Councillor when the Council fail to do things. Preferential treatment should not be given just because a Councillor gets involved. With the huge number of vacant and deleted posts it should not come as a surprise that service from the Council is affected. I know from personal experience that when you ask questions you do not get a reply.

Nicholas Taylor, if the council did their jobs properly we wouldn't feel the need to go over their heads, hts is not fit for purpose, how they ever tendered and got the contract is beyond me, you call them for whatever reason and they only seem to tell you what you want to hear, they turn up when you don't expect them too and when your expecting them they don't show, utterly useless, Billy smarts come to mind.

Is it the New builds fault?

Yes as Glenda is moaning again
