THE deputy leader has expressed his concern for the welfare of residents of Terminus House affected by the fire at the converted office block on Saturday evening.
Councillor David Carter, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Housing, said:
“Any fire in a tower block in the town is concerning and this must have been a frightening experience for all those affected. We are in contact with both Caridon and the fire service to find out what happened, and we are seeking urgent reassurances that appropriate fire safety measures and evacuation procedures are and were in place.
“Harlow Council has never placed any households in Terminus House and this continues to be the case. However, we were made aware of the fire and our housing team was on standby to assist households with emergency accommodation and we were ready to open a rest centre. We remained in contact with the fire service, and we were ready to provide help. In the end our help was not required as all residents were able to return to their homes after the smoke cleared.
“I would like to thank the emergency services for their quick response to the situation and the council staff who were on standby ready to assist.”
Hopefully the Council will use this fire as leverage to get this blight on Harlow closed down.
It's Caridon who should provide emergency accommodation. It's not council accommodation but a private provider who is not looking after its tenants. People put into substandard housing, it's a disgrace

Lets not forget that it was Tory legislation that allowed office blocks to be converted to rabbit hatch sized homes and our then Labour controlled Council who sat on it's hands for a number of years doing nothing to stop such developments from being created. It should be noted that similar blocks elsewhere have been used by Harlow Council to provide a short term home for some residents of Harlow.
The Conservatives accepted £400,000 in donations from Richard Sharp who profited from Caridon the owners of Terminus house.
Surely its the company who housed the people should be offering another home until work has been completed. Not Harlow council
This was a very distressing event for the tenants. We should never be in this situation. Over crowded expensive( mostly paid by benefits) poor housing. These permitted developments Never designed for tenants and fire safety has to be questionable. This is the legacy of 40 years of Neo liberal ideology .only around 25% of sold council homes not replaced. We are losing more through gentrification/Demolition than are being built. These tenants should be in affordable council homes. Building council homes has been proved sustainable socially environmentally and financially. Creating jobs in many fields.Harlow Defend Council Housing
