Harlow Labour take their campaigning to Gilden Park

News / Wed 7th Jun 2023 at 12:41pm

OVER the last few weeks, we have noticed that Harlow Labour have been canvassing up in the new developments of Gilden Park.

With Harlow Labour leader, cllr Chris Vince hoping to be selected as the parliamentary candidate at the next General Election, we caught up with him at the heart of the new development to hear what residents were saying to him.

These may well be the voters who could make the difference in a General Election in 2024.

Community facilities not being providing is a result of changes in the land compensation in 1961 by the Conservatives. Prior to this date, the increase in land value created by planning permission was available to local authorities to provide community facilities. The National Planning Policy Framework introduced in 2012 by the Conservatives gives developers a free hand. Economist Liam Halligan described the planning system in his book Home Truths as: "It would be hard to conceive of a system skewed in favour of landowners and the housebuilding industry to a greater extent than the one we have, and to the detriment of ordinary homebuyers.”

Is the Labour Party planning to radically alter land compensation or viability assessments that allows developers to wriggle out of their community facilities obligations? Answer is definitely No. Chris Vince can talk about "putting pressure on developers" all he likes. The system is rigged in favour of developers and major changes in legislation are necessary and long overdue. Talk is cheap as politicians know.

David Vincent makes a good point: talk is cheap and very easy when one is in opposition with no responsibility to perform or deliver on anything.

Chris is making sure the only safe Labour seat in town is still onboard for next year after Labour's pathetic Local Election performance where they actually lost a seat to the unpopular Tories. Let's not forget this is from the Party of John Prescott who said "The Green Belt is a Labour success, and we're going to build on it!" So they have!
