Harlow Council bosses help clean up old signage

News / Fri 18th Aug 2023 at 07:52am

AS part of the Harlow Council’s priority to restore pride in the town, Councillors Dan Swords and Nicky Purse went out with colleagues from HTS today (Thursday 17 August) to begin a programme of work to clean up rusted and broken signs, sandbags, traffic cones and signage frames from previous roadworks etc. which have been left lying around on our highways.

Work began today along and around the A414, with the truck being used quickly filling up with old signs from crossings and roundabouts along with other rubbish.

This is a big project but will make a huge difference to the appearance of our roads and is all part of restoring pride in Harlow.

Councillor Nicky Purse, cabinet portfolio holder for environment, said:

“It is a real bugbear of ours that so many signs and other items are left behind once highways projects are completed. Many have been there for far too long and we’re determined to get all of this cleared up across town.

“It will make a real impact on improving how Harlow looks, particularly around our roundabouts and their surrounding areas. I want to thank the team at HTS for their work in getting this programme started and I am really looking forward to seeing all the unnecessary signage finally gone.”

TRY getting your Conservative Essex County Council colleagues to replace the broken lamposts, kerbstones and road signs. The have neglected them for years!

I heard from a road worker that under Essex County's PFI deal on road works the contractor gets paid for each sign out on the roads. Maybe the worker was 'pulling my leg', but Harlow's county councillors may wish to comment on this?

Lets not forget that as Council tax payers all these signs have been left, sometimes for months or even years by Essex County Council who must have gone on and wasted money buying new ones to place elsewhere at our expense. I expect many residents have felt like doing what Dan and Nicky are doing but may have been afraid of being accused of stealing County Council property. Did our Councillors get permission?, Where will they dispose of it all? Can residents take a leaf out of the Councillors books and do the same without fear of retribution? I feel sure like me residents would be happy to help.

Can the council replace the very old road and street signs that are in Harlow! They are a very dated item and it make Harlow look tatty! They are in a very poor Blue colour and some are hardly readable! You could ask the schools to get the kids to design some new ones and have a competition! Lets face it the only one I can think of being replaced is ZELENSKY Avenue!!

Talking of signs maybe you can update the sign near Sainsbury's that says Sports Centre as it's not been there for over 10 years
