Reading is fun at The Downs Primary School

Education / Mon 9th Oct 2023 at 08:13am

THE Downs Primary School and Nursery is having a big push on reading, particularly Reading for Pleasure as research has shown that this is the biggest predictor of future achievement and there are lots of ways the school community is getting involved.

There have already been Parent Reading Sessions in Years 1 and 2, Shared Reading sessions between Year 4 and Reception classes and each year group has had a trip to Harlow Town Library (with lots of parents in tow) and received their library card. They have also launched the first of their themed months of reading challenges – the first is Reading Bingo! In this challenge, children from Reception to Year 6 will be given a bingo card with various types of books, ways of reading them and people to read them with and to!

If you are a parent of a child at the Downs and you would like to be involved, Parent Reading sessions are happening weekly in Year 1 and 2 on Fridays and if they are in other years, ask your class teacher for more information.

If you are interested in your child enrolling in the Downs School, Reception Open Days are:

•Wednesday 11th October 2023 – 9am

•Tuesday 7th November 2023 – 1:30pm

•Thursday 23rd November 2023 – 9am

•Wednesday 10th January 2024 – 9am and 1:30pm
