Education minister Gillian Keegan tells schools to let parents see sex education materials

News / Tue 24th Oct 2023 at 02:28pm

EDUCATION minster Gillian Keegan has written to schools in England ordering them to make the materials used in children’s sex education available to be seen by parents, warning headteachers there can be “no ifs, no buts, no more excuses” reports The Guardian.

Ms Keegan, who is the boss of Harlow MP and minister for apprenticeships and skills, Robert Halfon has said “it is vital that parents have confidence in what their children are being taught”.

It is the second letter the education secretary has sent to schools on the issue, which has been seized upon by some backbench Conservative MPs amid claims that children are being exposed to inappropriate material during relationships, sex and health education (RSHE) at school.

You can also read the letter as well (see below).

The decision hasn’t gone down very well with Passmores Learning Community Head, Vic Goddard.

Mr Goddard said: “School’s are paying for the culture war that the DfE is trying to create around sex education.

“They are unwilling to put their names to official guidance but want to stoke the fire of confrontation for leaders and their communities”.

“it is vital that parents have confidence in what their children are being taught”? It is also vital that parents have confidence in WHERE their children are taught..........We have kids and teachers with nowhere to teach, and be taught, and today alone we have this about sex education and a Christmas card competition?? Where are your priorities? a total disgrace. #helpsfg

It is vital parents have confidence their children are being taught. That means face to face teaching, in a safe environment with high quality material. SFG students have been consistently failed by DfE incompetence. Emergency classrooms have served their time gap, where are the specialist prefabricated classrooms that were planned? I think there's a 15m exclusion zone around the modular main building, is it repairable? Is it going? Why hasn't deconstruction started? Why haven't archetect plans been shared for brick and mortar convention build? Is the plan to let the children study in a building site? Has the footings been started for the replacement classrooms. This is the DfE mess from incompetence. I don't think there's even been an acceptance of ownership over this mess, let alone an apology for sustained failure. Its not time for meetings over what might one day happen, its time to share information, replace the emergency class rooms with the prebuilt type more suitable to inclement weather and in parallel sort out the main permanent buildings. Does no one feel embarrassed at the DfE and the failure to deliver the schools buildings. Its an absolute shambles. #helpsfg

How about you and Halfon start putting schoolchildren into safe buildings first. You lot disgust me.

I don’t know of any schools that don’t allow parents to see sex education materials. This is an announcement about nothing that attempts to divert attention from the chaotic failure of the Conservatives to find proper teaching space for a thousand Harlow children.
