Harlow Chorus beat the chill with electric performance of Handel’s Messiah

Entertainment / Tue 12th Dec 2023 at 07:01am

HARLOW Chorus performed Christmas favourite Messiah to a sell-out audience on Saturday night (December 9th).

Over 200 concert goers braved the arctic conditions in St John’s Church, Eppingwhere the heating had broken down! – to hear the musicians give a scintillating performance of Handel’s masterful oratorio.

The choir, led by Dr Edward-Rhys Harry and accompanied with great assurance by the Bishop’s Stortford Sinfonia and Aaron Preston on organ continuo, delivered a series of choruses from the work interspersed with glittering solos from four professional soloists: Charlotte Bowden (soprano), Eirlys Myfanwy Davies (mezzo-soprano), Rory Carver (tenor) and Meilir Jones (bass).

The entire audience rose to their feet as the opening bars of the rousing Hallelujah Chorus rang out – a tradition that started with King George II in 1743.

Despite the cold, there were many warm words of praise from the audience, both in the interval over a welcome glass of wine and after the show.
