Harlow Labour leader on the Baroness Mone scandal: “The people of Harlow deserve their money back”

Politics / Mon 18th Dec 2023 at 05:55pm

THE LEADER of Harlow Labour has issued a statement regarding Baroness Michelle Mone and the PPE contract scandal.

Councillor Chris Vince said: “Watching Conservative Baroness Mone declare ‘I don’t know what we did wrong’ made me feel sick. I believe she and her husband profiteered at a time of national crisis.

“They took public money for goods that proved to be useless, and they lied about their involvement.

“I remember when school children and teachers were volunteering  to make face masks (including some of my former colleagues) for health service workers, when kind hearted Harlow residents were collecting prescriptions to make free deliveries to those who were sheltering and when everybody I knew was staying at home, on government instructions, to help stop the spread of the virus.

“Meanwhile a group of friends of the Conservatives and dodgy donors were plotting on how best to rip the country off for billions of pounds of taxpayer’s money.

Michelle Mone and her husband set up a company to deliver desperately needed PPE. Despite no experience in the delivery of this type of equipment, they won orders for more than £200 million, thanks to a recommendation from fellow Conservative Michael Gove.

Much of the equipment they delivered was overpriced and unusable. The company made a £60 million profit, much of which was paid out to Michelle Mone’s husband who stashed it away. Then, they denied their involvement for two years about their involvement and threatened journalists who were looking into the affair.

But they are not alone. Frankly the £200 million they profited, enough to build six Sir Frederick Gibberd schools in Harlow that wouldn’t fall down, is a drop in the ocean of the billions that the government admit was lost due to their own procurement incompetence.

Sunak’s Conservative government seem to have given up on seeking taxpayer’s money back, I wonder why?

“But Labour won’t. If Labour wins the up coming general election they have committed to track down the grifters who profiteered at a time of national crisis.

“And if I am elected I shall be saying loud and clear to those like Michelle Mone, who saw COVID as a money making opportunity, “we deserve our money back”

Chris is absolutely right. I want an MP who will stand up for Harlow taxpayers and demand we get our money back from cheating Conservative cronies. I note Halfon is very quiet on this topic.

"Frankly the £200 million they profited, enough to build six Sir Frederick Gibberd schools in Harlow". Back in 2022, the parliamentary watchdog on public spending accused the Department of Health of wasting £4bn of taxpayers’ money on unusable personal protective equipment. The type made by this crony. £4bn is the approximate cost of a new hospital for Harlow. https://www.bmj.com/content/377/bmj.o1435

Still no comparison with the financial and human cost of Labour Blair's illegal wars. That man should be serving a life sentence. Labour hypocrisy has no limits.

Apart from this scandal, let’s not oversee that this woman is only 52. That’s pretty young to be a lady in the House of Lords. I always thought people in the House of Lords should have earnt it from wisdom and knowledge. She sold lingerie before becoming a baronessin her forties, from David Cameron who appointed her - we all have a pretty good idea how she got where she is.

Don't forget The Baroness Owen of Alderly Edge who is only 30. She was raised to the peerage by Johnson.

The Baroness does have a cracking face though and is FAF as Keith De La Lemon would say. I'd gladly strip her of her honour.
