Council tax in Essex is to rise by 5% from April, the county council has said.

COUNCIL tax in Essex is to rise by 5% from April, the county council has said.

The Conservative administration said it was doing so “reluctantly”, as it needed to make £32m savings, which would include changes to support for adults with disabilities.

Last year, it increased council tax by 3.5%, choosing not to increase it by the maximum allowed by the government.

Chancellor of Essex Chris Whitbread said there was “a lot of additional pressure” this year and “a spike in the requirements in children’s services”.

Chris Whitbread

In October, Mr Whitbread said the council had “seen a significant and worrying increase in pressures” in children’s services, with a projected overspend of £16.6m which had trebled in three months.

“A lot of that has come from having much more complex packages to deliver than we have had before,” he said.

The 9.8% rise in the National Living Wage – from 1 April to £11.44 an hour – and social care inflation, will cost the council an extra £42m, the authority said.

Mr Whitbread said there would be no cuts to services like libraries and family centres.

The tax increase should raise an extra £40m a year from more than 500,000 households in Essex, but the council still needs to make £32m of savings.

Nearly half of those will be met in adult social care, including a programme supporting adults with learning difficulties and autism.

So raising £40 million with extra taxes and a need to make £32 million cuts means a gap of £72 million. A result of 14 years of Tory misrule? Meanwhile they are throwing £870 million at nuclear projects (lining the pockets of EDF and foreign speculators) that are at least five to a hundred times more costly than green alternatives.

Why are people constantly paying for services they don't use or need.

Some people still do not believe we live in a communist country.

We should be able to vote on things like this, the founding fathers of America had it right with their way of thinking. You have no say in it, they just decide "yeah we are going to increase your taxes, what are you going to do about it peasant?" It's clear to me that conservatives are now the party of high taxes, very un-conservative of them. Considering the bosses of Essex County Council are on more than the PM they should take some cuts to their salaries or will they continue to milk the public for all they have. They don't care about us people, they never have, it's all just all about power and attractive salaries to them.

Can we have the details of where cuts will be made as in the statement above it looks as if £16 million of the cuts will be to adult social care including a programme for adults with learning disabilities and autism.

We pay through the nose and get nothing while if you are politically connected (to either party) you get rich. We are taken for fools. Guy not only are we communist / socialist (and we know how those always end) we are also deeply corrupt

A few ways to save money ! Stop paying managers more than the Prime Minister, stop paying out millions on private health insurance for managers, stop subsidising cars for staff, stop staff going on foreign jolly -ups (why?) India and the US to name a few. This will never happen as there are too many snouts in the trough.

One of the main benefactors is the Police? Don't mind paying for Ambulance & Fire Brigade but Essex Police is a useless almost obscure service! About time somebodyat Basildon Council reported directly with or to Essex County Council regarding the state of the roads! We know where our council tax money goes & it's not to services in Basildon! It's also about time Basildon Council took responsibility for day to day services i.e. Litter Collection, Rodent Control, Cutting back trees & bushes, spraying weeds to prevent growth & Sort out defunct building i.e. Craylands estate & Laindon Shopping Centre, etc, etc. Basildon Council seems to be good at doing deals with building firms that go bust. Swan Housing & the contractors that started Empire Cinema in the Town Centre, also 6 Million pound was wasted on Dale Farm. Basildon Council should remember it is a town & it's focus should be solely on local & it's residents issues!

Does this increase include the extra from the PCC or is that going to be more on top and are Harlow District Council going to increase their rates also? Remember that tax cut Sunak & Halfron made so much noise about, well that's almost all that gone.

I'm sure I remember the Conservatives promising in their election literature that they would cut Council tax?

Adam, I think most of us remember Paul White, Baron Hanningfield, the former Conservative Leader of Essex County Council who was convicted of false accounting and sent to prison. He now sits in The House of Lords. He can now receive a £332 per day attendance allowance, plus travel expenses and subsidised restaurant facilities just for signing in. - That is where our money goes.

With towns and city in Britain struggling so much and the services at an all time low, with people struggling so much with their home finances and the stress to their mental wellbeing. Please answer me mr halfon why do the billionaire's control 281% more of the wealth than they did wjen the tories were elected in 2010..thats a sin.

So Essex is cutting adult social care, putting an extra strain on our troubled NHS, BUT they have paid a Southend prankster nearly £500,000 over three years for "community engagement" —- They paid Simon Harris £500K to run a Facebook page —- Essex County Council is obscene!

Dave I was wondering if people were going to discover that £500,000 payment. It seams that government is rather free with other peoples money. It seems we need an audit at every level as I just cannot see where all the taxes we pay at every level are going. There should be no cuts, or tax increases until the national audit is passed and politicians should not be paid until it is passed.

For those curious https://www.essexlive.news/news/essex-news/simon-harris-essex-county-council-9024693 Look at this 500K spent by the council to push lockdowns, vaccination etc. Utterly abhorrent. 58K for vegas trip and PAH we are being played for fools and being impoverished while others with the right connections become very rich

I think we should all make sure we vote. If there is no one on the ballot you support simply spoil your paper as they have to count spoilt papers. If the number of spoilt papers exceeds the votes for the winner then something might change. Though I will not hold my breath on this.

And just as Essex County Council opens the bidding for the first section of the very latest Chelmsford Bypass - This bit will cost £95M then there is another £69 million for upgrades to the Army and Navy junction in Chelmsford. How may bypasses does a town need? - That is where our money goes and that's where savings can be made!
