Harlow MP marks National Pothole Day with challenge to local residents

News / Mon 15th Jan 2024 at 09:45am

HARLOW MP Robert Halfon, is asking local residents for their help to mark National Pothole Day by reporting new potholes across the town now.

Last summer, Mr Halfon “led the charge” on ending the pothole plague infuriating Harlow drivers with great success, securing vital repair and resurfacing works across the town. Working with Harlow Council and the Conservative County Councillors, Mr Halfon told YH he secured a deal with Essex County Council to base a team of contractors in Harlow full time, carrying out repairs quickly and resurfacing major routes through the town, such as Edinburgh Way and the A414.

Now, the local MP is asking Harlow residents for their help to stamp out the pothole scourge once and for all by reporting new potholes to Essex County Council. Potholes in Harlow can be reported online: https://www.essexhighways.org/tell-us

Calling local drivers to action, Robert commented, “Like everyone in Harlow, I know how frustrating the potholes that appear in our roads every year can be. Not only are they a blight on our beautiful town, but they are dangerous for drivers and pedestrians and have the potential to cause significant damage to cars and vans.

“Last summer, I successfully lobbied Essex County Council, who look after all the roads in Harlow, securing urgent repairs and resurfacing works for roads across the town. I was able to publish a timetable of work between April and July, with contractors carrying out hundreds of pothole repairs. From Great Brays to Longhouse Lane, Edinburgh Way to First Avenue, potholes were filled and roads resurfaced, making our journeys safer and restoring pride in our town.

I want to reassure residents that I remain determined to end the influx of potholes once and for all, but I need your help. I am asking local residents to proactively report new potholes across our town so that I can hold Essex County Council to account, ensuring repairs are carried out quickly and effectively before they become bigger and even more dangerous.”

Last year, the Government invested £200 million across the country to tackle potholes alone, with over £8.3 billion made available for new roads and infrastructure upgrades. In Essex, the County Council announced £12 million to fill potholes and repair roads.

In October, Essex County Council launched a trial of a new pothole repair method, using long-lasting and sustainable materials to fill potholes without digging up the road, speeding up remedial work and getting drivers from A to B with as little inconvenience as possible.

All along momples road. It was patched ( if you can call it that) but it lasted less than a year. There are more potholes than before, speed bumps that are in bits, just crossing this road is dangerous, avoiding potholes, trying to actually get a safe place to cross with all the idiots parking on junctions ect and then the drivers that think going 40 down a 20mph road is acceptable.

As the responsibility for fixing potholes lies with the Conservative controlled county council, I suggest Mr Halfon gives his colleagues there a proverbial kick up the backside. This problem has gone on far too long. The only time anything at all is done is when there's an election due. Same with house repairs. Just Halfon looking for another desperate publicity opportunity.

Does Halfon think we're stupid? People have been reporting potholes for years and 14 years of Tory government and they do nothing about it. No, I'm not going to contribute to your pointless campaign. You know where the potholes are already so go and fill them. Disgusting man.

He has secured a deal with the conservative controlled county council to do their jobs. Why did this need a deal? Shouldn’t this be the least that is expected?

Rob must be getting desperate to publish an article like this. The fact is, residents have always reported repairs to ECC but often months if not years have passed without anything being done. Work has very recently been carried out to patch holes along Elizabeth Way, but within days you can see where they are going to reappear again. Take a look to what has happened along Southern Way in recent weeks, a whole stretch has been damaged and other areas close by looks as though they will follow suit soon. Harlow's roads were never constructed to take so much traffic and large lorries and need a complete re-build if the council is not going to keep throwing good money after bad. As for our four Conservative County Councillors ......

I WOULD like the street lights repaired near the cock pub they have been out for at least three months , it's very dark and dangerous. The three horseshoes road is all ready dangerous this just add to it. County Council have done nothing about it . They have informed many times.

Desperate from Mr Halfon. The Conservatives in Essex have been in charge of road repairs for decades. The money that the Conservatives in Essex get for road repairs has been massively cut over the last fourteen years by the Conservative government. Now Conservative Mr Halfon wants to claim credit for getting a small proportion of the potholes badly fixed with temporary repairs.

So a Minister in a Conservative Government which has neglected the roads for years is now leading the charge for their repair! Could there be an election on the way sometime soon?

National pot hole day. OMG did he just think this up to take advantage of another photo shoot?? The only time these were repaired was when a driver threatened them with action over damage to their car. It's exactly the same with uneven pavements & drainage covers. Get real someone please!!

It's national pothole day everyday we are always reporting them to those ECC kop a deafen wasters in Chelmsford . Here's an idea , take up all the crap tarmac back to the concrete roads we once had in Harlow. Never any potholes then.

Strange how vehicles have to be fit for the road via their regular MOT, but the roads don't have to be fit for vehicles!!

Essex County Council (Tory run council) are responsible for looking after our roads and it is their duty to repair the potholes. If this is not being done and Robert Halfon (Tory MP) has to lobby them before the much needed repairs are done, I have to ask why? Are Tory run Essex County Council actually fit for purpose? They should not need lobbying, they should not need people to endlessly report potholes to them, they should not need gimmicks like National Pothole Day, they should not need fed-up residents of this town shaming them into doing the repairs. They should do their job that they are supposed to do. And if they can't, then they should be replaced with people who can. And just to make it clear - I'm talking about the elected Councillors not the staff of the council who can only do what the elected Councillors allow them to do.

Darren, could not have put it better myself, as a motorcyclist it's very off putting to ride, especially when it's been raining and the holes fill with water.

Last year they filled the holes and the draines, now the water is stuck there, and what about the pavements that are ruined because car drivers drive on them

Better to have resurfacing day or better resurfacing year to put the roads back to the standard they should be. the pot holes repairs don't last long enough and your always back to square one start putting the money to good use. all you here is more money for pot holes repairs and you can't repair repair them before more appear all your doing is waisting money and people keep having to pay for repairs on there cars we should have to pay no road tax till roads are fit for use 😅😂😭

Edna, we waited almost a year for the street lights to be repaired in our area, so I don't hold much hope for you after three months.

The roads need stripping back to concrete and fully resurfacing. This used to be done regularly and I don't remember potholes being a problem. These shoddy patch repairs don't seem ti even last 6 mknths at best. It's a disgrace

The footpaths need sorting out too, they're so uneven and broken up. Made worse by having to try and dodge overgrown vegetation. We are devolving as a species

It really does make me smile when asked to report potholes. For months now one entrance in to Little Cattins the pot holes have been getting bigger and bigger. Trying to get in touch with ECC. Is a joke.Got through via e-mail to our leading councillor .He would get on to ECC and request immediate action.WE ARE STILL WAITING and it is getting more dangerous by the day.

Hello I'm suffering big time on the 10th of July I had to have an operation to fix my broken left ankle and foot because of a pot hole and now I've got metal plates in my foot and ankle for the rest of my life

My grandfather was one of the road layers back in the 60s and 70s, back then the roads were laid using sturdy good materials. Hardly any potholes, if there were any you'd best know they'd be on it sorting them out. Nowadays they just use cheap crappy materials to fill them in, takes little to no time so no care is put into it and bang they reappear a few months to a year later. All they do now is put a plaster over a gashing hole and the councillors/MP get some photos taken to show off to the gullible people who buy into their nonsense about "restoring pride in Harlow." It's all a photo op to these people.

Mr halfon there is no need to make all these promises because of the upcoming election. I firmly believe the people of harlow are too thick to realise what a shambles your party have made of britain and the damage your tory boys have done to a generation of our youth. Your lack of spending on services throughout thoes years of austerity he hurt british people so very much..

East Park is unique It has no potholes Why? Because the road surface was entirely replaced at the same time The French do the same thing and their road surfaces are far superior to ours Filling in pot holes is false economy Do it properly!!!!!?

Pot holes to the right of me, pot holes to the left of me. Onward, onward drove the brave people of Harlow. Pot holes have a mind of their own like Wombles you don't know when they will pop up. Like Mafia cement used in the cheap construction of school buildings in the UK, 'Oh I never take bribes', road surface material is either cheap or good quality. Clearly if a good quality material is purchased by the tight fisted council purchasing team, it will last longer. Residents could buy quick drying cement to fill holes near where they live. As cheap as chips, job done, and will last longer than the cheap material councils buy off a back of a lorry in a lay-by off the A12.

They 'closed' Southern Way overnight for 2 weeks outside Latton Bush Centre, worked on it for a couple of nights then left. Still pot holes and broken surface remains.

How about we have a vigilante day where we go out armed with spray paint and paint around the pot holes, photograph them and send them into the council and also the government. Pinning the photo's to the front of the civic centre so the boy can see them as well

Tarmac is useless for our roads because of the sheer weight of traffic ( no pun intended ) it’s no use just filling in a hole with the black stuff that was only used as a much cheaper alternative than concrete in the first place which in itself has proven to need far more maintenance than concrete so working out a far more expensive option than concrete 😳😳 why do you think they didn’t/don’t use tarmac on our motorway’s???? It wouldn’t last a month unless it was 12ft deep instead of 6inches deep ( approximately )

On the Street Lights, best to raise a complaint to get things moving. I finally got the one Street Light in my cul-de-sac replaced and repaired in December having chased it since March. Even us ex-Councillors have issues it seems! Some lampposts have faults and need an external contractor, which adds to the time taken to repair! As for the roads, it's time Essex CC took the contract away from Wilson Bouden. They are cheap and use cheap materials! Hence potholes are back very soon after a repair. Also Essex need to scrap the stupid policy of only filling in potholes when they reach a certain depth! You report a pothole and they ask the depth of it! Funnily enough I don't drive around with a ruler, and I am not I leaping out of my car, risking life and limb to measure it's depth for them! Ludicrous! Mark Gough - UKIP/ Respect UK

He really has got some front. The pot holes in Harlow have been caused by cuts in funding from our Tory council and the Tory County Council. It's all a diversion. Our Town needs a Labour Council with funding to deal with the problem.

It's a disgrace when an ambulance damages two of it's wheels along southern way due to a bloody big pot hole. Drivers pay road tax so that roads should maintained to a safe standard so that cars, motorbikes and cyclists can use the roads safely. Where is road tax being spent !? Because it sure as hell is not being spent on the maintenance of our roads. Our taxes are going to pay for Your over paid salaries. Council tax & Utility bills, Mortgages and some 2nd Mortgages along with your Expenses and your subsidized bars and restaurants in the houses of parliament. Your all living the life of riley. Your completely out of touch with the constituents your ment to represent. Your living in your world Mr Halfon Not ours !!

The problem is not where are the potholes. You know where they are, you fix them few months later they are cracked again. It's just a con between the contractors and the councils.

Every Harlow resident everyone who drives to work in Harlow everyone who drives to Harlow to go shopping and everyone who drives through Harlow to get to their destinations knows exactly where every pothole is why do the council need members of the public to inform them why don’t they already know and more to the point why is nothing being done about them it was a couple of months they wanted praise for securing millions of pounds to repair the roads what has happened to that money?

Halfon has been MP in Harlow for how long? And now he congratulates himself for planning to fill them in, just before the election. Did you notice that for 15 years not a single road repair was done in Harlow, schools budgets have been halved, the PA hospital has fallen into such desperate repair that 20% less beds today than when Halfon came to power. Halfon is well known to "detest Harlow plebs" his words, documented , vote for him again and take the blame yourself for screwing the people of Harlow.

Mr drain the roads
2024-01-18 14:02:29

Need to help get to the root of a lot of pot holes by cleaning road drainage by pumping out where water just laying in road which from what i see now days do not seem to do anymore 😔
