UK Power Networks: Watch out for wires when you DIY

WATCH out for wires when you DIY is the message from the UK’s biggest electrical distributor as Essex homeowners focus on New Year plans for home improvements in 2024.
UK Power Networks is warning homeowners to take extra care and be aware of potential dangers as they enthusiastically plan their DIY jobs. Anyone planning to pick up a drill or a hammer should check for electricity cables before working on walls or floors, as wiring can be hidden out of sight.
The key advice from the company which distributes electricity across London, the South East and East of England, is to always to use a cable detector to check for internal wiring that can’t be seen.
In the ‘cost of living crisis’, more people are likely to ‘do it yourself’ rather than pay someone. The timely message to homeowners also includes a reminder that it’s safer not to stand on furniture but to use a secure step ladder.
Care also needs to be taken for outside jobs such as needing to look up and look out for any overhead power cables when using a ladder propped against the house or cleaning windows with extendable poles.
Ros Forbes, a safety advisor at UK Power Networks, said: “If people are undertaking work they do not have recent experience of, they could easily forget what steps to take to complete the work safely.
“Because we are more comfortable at home it is easier to become complacent or distracted. Accidents can happen if people are not mindful of the dangers around electricity cables and there could be serious consequences for any lapses in concentration.
“We are urging people to take care and remember that power cables can be hidden out of sight. Make sure you stay safe when carrying out any DIY work at home.
