Harlow MP Robert Halfon issues statement on attacks on Jewish students.

News / Sun 11th Feb 2024 at 06:36pm

HARLOW MP Robert Halfon has gone onto social media to condemn the continuing incidents of anti semitism on university campuses in the United Kingdom and further afield.

Mr Halfon said: “Many in the Jewish Community feel let down by inaction by some Universities on antisemitism – their view is that at best some Universities are turning a blind eye to extremism on campus or at worst just appeasing it.

The increase in antisemitic intimidation and threats that we’ve seen on campuses since October 7th make me deeply angry. Antisemitism must never be tolerated on campuses or across society.

I spoke directly with the Vice Chancellor of Leeds University to unambiguously express the Government’s concerns. And to personally remind the University of its responsibility to protect their Jewish students and university community from antisemitism.

Unfortunately, since October 7th, it has become all too common for me to have to personally call Vice Chancellors to remind them of this. Whilst universities are independent institutions, here are some of the other actions the government is taking to tackle antisemitism.

I was grateful to PM Rishi Sunak and Jeremy Hunt for giving an extra £7 million in the budget to tackle antisemitism in schools and universities.

While most universities have adopted the IHRA definition of antisemitism, some have still not. And some that have are not acting on it. So we’re creating an antisemitism charter so universities can demonstrate an active commitment to tackling antisemitism.

Alongside GillianKeegan, I have written to all universities to underline they should take immediate disciplinary action if a student is found to be inciting racial hatred or violence.

And yes – if they are suspended, their student finance could be, too.

Studying in the UK is a privilege, not an entitlement. Any foreign national with a student visa who incites racial hatred or violence can have their visa revoked and be expelled from the country.

Gillian Keegan and I are in open dialogue with Jewish education and community groups so we can understand what they are facing and how we can do more to help them. I’ve been grateful to the Union of Jewish Students, the Jewish Chaplaincy and the Chief Rabbi

I’m grateful to be working with the PM and Gillian Keegan on this – who care deeply about the Jewish community. One antisemitic act is one too many. We do not tolerate antisemitism. I will continue to work flat-out to protect our Jewish communities on campuses.

Jews don't behead teachers who speak out against them, so it's easier for the teachers to take the other side.

Jews have their own schools, hospitals and police. And by the way Arabs are Semitic people too

If only our government were as vocal and spoke out in support of the Batley school teacher who has had death threats and Been in hiding for 3 years now, Religious bigotry has no place in our education system and any such harassment should be dealt with swiftly and decisively.

Strange how a political issue in one country can so easily translate into religious issues in other countries. Maybe it would help if politicians and the media stopped breaking things down to their lowest common denominator.

Let's be clear speaking out against Netanyahu and his right wing chronies who appear wish to take rights away from the Jewish people, look to be stealing land in the illegally occupied West Bank, massacring thousands of civilians in Gaza, are perpetrating a "war" to stay in power to avoid being called to account for on 7th Oct, failing to act to defend the state on observations and intelligence from the most closely monitored boarder in the world can not be antisemitism. It is a condemnation of a political party who should respond to their own people's call to go to the country and an even greater condemnation of the "great powers" failure to set up a two state solution immediately after ww2. The power of self determination of a people within their own land is an idea that cannot be killed by war and because of 7th Oct the killing of even one more innocent by starvation, a bullet or bomb cannot be justifiable. "The Universal Soldier, he really is the blame" ...(Dylan : "Jaw, Jaw, is better than war, war." (Churchill"). If the money spent on munitions across the world in one year were spent on tackling poverty and starvation then these scourges would be history (UN President).

The first released recording was a single by The Highwaymen, released in September 1963. However, I think you will find that it was not a Dylan, but rather Donovan who is most associated with it.

Robert, would it help to hold a public meeting on this, a bit of a Harlow Question Time perhaps

James depends how ancient you are: Highwaymen 63: Buffy 64: Donovan 65: Glen Campbell 65: Dylan 2020. And many others. Now back to the main point: Does opposing and criticising the wars, policies and failures of a PM & party in power mean that those who criticise are anti whatever the mainstream religion is in that country?

Nostradamus, surely the main point of the article by Robert Halfon is the evidence of growing anti-semitism in the UK. It is somewhat ironic that in the 1930s, anti semitism was the mantra of the far- right Mosley British Union of Fascists whereas today it is represented through a unholy alliance of the far-left Socialist Workers Party, Labour Momentum, fashionable, woke, Guardianista so-called Islington style 'liberals' and radical militant Islamists. Not a very appealing dish.

Well when you are a Friend of Israel and receive payments from Israel, you are not allowed to talk about Palestine! Our Politicians and media have been been paid by foreign lobbying, is that legal?

2024-02-13 20:50:35

James there's plenty of evidence that criticism of a government is being confused with racism. It happens everywhere. Just look at other countries, the same pattern is, and has happened as in the middle east.

There isn't anti-Semitic harassment on campuses, and Halfon knows there isn't. There is protest against a state which is currently engaged in a brutal military campaign. Halfon of course supports that, so he cynically tries to portray those opposing it as anti-Semitic bigots. The man is dishonest. Can't wait to see the back of him come the next election.
