Have your say on the Replacement Essex Minerals Local Plan

News / Thu 15th Feb 2024 at 09:10am

RESIDENTS are being invited to have their say on the future of minerals development in Essex by Tuesday 19 March 2024.

Like other Planning Authorities across the country, Essex County Council (ECC) is required to publish a Minerals Local Plan. This provides planning policies for minerals development in Essex and identifies future sites for mineral extraction or quarrying. In 2020, ECC started a review of the Essex Minerals Local Plan in order to ensure it is up to date and fit for the future. This led to a decision to extend the Plan end date to 2040. As a result, new sites are needed in the county to meet the forecasted demand for materials, otherwise known as aggregates.

Replacement Essex Minerals Local PlanOn Tuesday 6 February, Essex County Council launched a consultation on the Replacement Essex Minerals Local Plan.

During the consultation, residents and other stakeholders, such as borough, city and district councils in Essex, can have their say on the sites submitted for inclusion, as well as the revised Plan itself.

Councillor Lee Scott, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Planning a Growing Economy, said:Minerals are essential to our way of life – we need them to build homes, schools, hospitals, roads, and much more.It is therefore in everyone’s interests that we have a proper plan in place to secure an adequate supply of minerals to support the development and future growth of Essex. The suitability of all the sites submitted has been assessed by experts, and we are now asking residents and stakeholders to feedback on the updated plan, as well as the sites submitted for inclusion, as part of the consultation.

No decisions on the allocation of any sites have been made at this stage, and we will take the views of our communities into account as the Replacement Essex Minerals Local Plan is finalised.Future of minerals development in the districtCouncillor Nigel Bedford, Epping Forest District Council Portfolio Holder for Place said:The Replacement Essex Minerals Local Plan is an important opportunity for residents to have their say on the future of minerals development in our district.

As minerals are essential for various aspects of our daily lives, including infrastructure and construction projects, it is crucial that we have a comprehensive and up-to-date plan to ensure a reliable supply of materials. We invite all residents and stakeholders to provide their feedback on the revised plan and the sites submitted for inclusion.

By actively participating in this consultation, we can work together to shape the future of minerals development in Essex and ensure that it aligns with the needs of our residents.

I encourage everyone to learn more about the plan and take part in the consultation before Tuesday, 19 March 2024.Take partResidents can find out more about the Replacement Essex Minerals Local Plan and take part in the consultation at:www.essex.gov.uk/minerals-review
