The Veolia Orchard campaign set to take root in Harlow

General / Sun 18th Feb 2024 at 10:39am

THE Veolia Orchard campaign will be donating almost 600 fruit trees and 800 strawberry plants to UK schools limited by space or without green areas to give children a stronger start by learning more about the environment. Now in its second year, the scheme has expanded to another 190 schools across the country and for the first time includes four orchards in Harlow.

Working in partnership, the Veolia Harlow team nominated schools in Harlow to receive the free fruit trees and four lucky schools were drawn at random.

The apple and pear trees, provided by Grow at Brogdale who specialise in organic plant care, will be delivered to the schools in early March, when the trees have been in hibernation over winter, giving them the best chance to bloom in spring.

Ricky Holsworth, Contract Manager at Veolia Harlow said:

“Improving air quality around schools, engaging pupils on the power of plants and fruit so that children can have the pleasure of picking and eating fresh food, is all part of our purpose to deliver ecological transformation. We look forward to helping the children to plant their trees.”

This campaign is being powered by Veolia’s Sustainable Schools programme which educates children and young adults on the importance of protecting our planet and the environment. Councillor Nicky Purse, portfolio holder for Sustainability and Environment, said:

“We’re delighted to have the Veolia Orchard campaign taking place in Harlow for the first time. This is a great opportunity for our local schools and children to gain hands-on experience and knowledge in plant care and growing their own fruit. Projects like this help improve the environment for future generations and instil pride in Harlow.”

The Veolia Orchard campaign will be open to all schools in Harlow later this year.
