Tories claim: “Harlow Labour vote against Council Tax support scheme for 6,000 vulnerable residents…. that they introduced 11 years ago”

News / Mon 26th Feb 2024 at 10:13am

LAST weeks Full Council meeting was certainly a night of division in the Council Chamber as the Harlow Labour opposition did not put an alternative budget and then voted against the only budget proposed claim the Harlow Conservatives.

Their press release states: “However, in another twist on the night the Harlow Labour group also voted against the Harlow Council Tax support scheme. The scheme, first introduced in 2013 by the then Harlow Labour administration, is designed to support 6,000 vulnerable residents in Harlow with their Council Tax bills.

The scheme includes up to 100% relief for vulnerable pensioners and 76% relief for other vulnerable residents. It covers all elements of Council Tax including the Essex County Council share, Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner share and the Harlow Council share and is worth over £1,500 to Harlow’s most vulnerable residents.

“The scheme was agreed as all Harlow Conservative councillors voted for it, but if Harlow Labour had won the vote, the Council Tax Support would have ended immediately and 6,000 vulnerable residents would have faced unexpected bills of over £1,500”.

Commenting on the vote, the Harlow Conservatives Cabinet Member for Finance and Governance, Cllr James Leppard, said: “The Harlow Conservatives proposed to freeze Harlow Council Tax. Harlow Labour voted against it. The Harlow Conservatives proposed tens of millions of pounds of investment into our town. Harlow Labour voted against it. The Harlow Conservatives proposed a Council Tax support scheme for 6,000 of the most vulnerable residents in Harlow. Harlow Labour voted against it.

“You may therefore assume that the opposition would have put forward an alternative Budget, as is usual practice, but they did not. So they voted against the Council’s Budget for the year ahead, yet decided not to put forward an alternative. If they had won the vote there would have been no Council Budget, and the meeting was advised the Council would be in serious risk of the Government taking over the Council because it would’ve been in an unlawful position.

“The idea of Harlow Labour running the council is unthinkable. They talk about cost of living pressures and then vote against a scheme which supports 6,000 of the most vulnerable residents in Harlow with no alternative in place. Again, if they had won the vote, the financial support would’ve been stopped immediately and vulnerable residents would’ve been hit with bills in excess of £1,500.

“Harlow Labour would run the Council and our town into the ground. They have no plan, no ideas and no clue of how to run a Council.”

The votes against the budget and moving elections to every 4 years show very clearly that the local Harlow Labour party headed by Chris Vince don't have Harlow residents best interests at heart, Chris Vince is just playing party politics in the hope of becoming an MP and gaining all the lucrative benefits and perks that it gives,

This headline is misleading: It is not a 'claim'. It is a fact. Harlow Labour voted against item 10 (e) Council Tax support scheme at the Council meeting last Thursday 22nd February. And it is a fact that they introduced the scheme in 2013. And it is a fact that the scheme supports 6,000 vulnerable residents. Therefore, it is not a claim, but a factual statement to say that Harlow Labour voted against Council Tax support scheme for 6,000 vulnerable residents that they introduced 11 years ago.
