UK Health Agency respond to critical report on future of site in Harlow

News / Wed 28th Feb 2024 at 09:40am

AS you may see, we have published the National Audit Office (NAO) report that looks at the delays to the UK Health Agency move to Harlow, and specifically, the spiralling costs.

We will be giving a number of organisations and individuals a chance to respond.

A UKHSA spokesperson said:

“Continued investment in our existing laboratories means we can respond safely and effectively to current health threats but there is an urgent need to modernise and replace our highest containment facilities to ensure we are prepared for the future.

“The Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent creation of UKHSA has required a review of the best way to deliver the specialist laboratories needed for the UK. This has considered a range of options including the Harlow scheme and the potential use of existing sites.

“We will continue working with DHSC to ensure that we have the right infrastructure in place to protect people from a wide range of health threats.”

The key sentence in the National Audit Office report on page 12 reads: "In our view, as things stand, the UK’s future resilience to dangerous diseases and value for taxpayers’ money are both being undermined by failures in decision-making for a key part of the national infrastructure." I notice this agency has yet another name. To date I believe the name of this agency has changed several times and guess what, they are still useless, a reputation they have had for many years and they still don’t understand they you need to change more than the name.
