THE congregation at Harlow’s St Stephen’s Church, Tye Green, received some important news at the end of their Sunday Service (17/03/24). The good news came in the form of a message from the Venerable Kate Peacock, Archdeacon of Stansted.

The Venerable Kate’s message said, “We are delighted that The Revd. Sophie Weller has been appointed as the Priest in Charge of the Six Villages Benefice in Harlow Deanery. She brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm for ministry with children and young people and has most recently served as the curate of St Stephen’s Church Harlow for the last three years. Any moving on is bittersweet; sadness at what is being left and excitement for what lies ahead, please do pray for Sophie, her husband Damien, and their son William. We are anticipating a move during the summer holidays and a licensing in early September. Please pray also for the life of the churches in the 6 Villages and for St Stephen’s Church, Harlow.”

On receiving the news, Revd. Sophie said, “I am feeling a mixture of sadness at the thought of leaving St. Stephen’s, but real excitement at my new role. I feel very blessed and excited to see what God will do.”

Revd. Darren McIndoe, Priest in Charge at St Stephen’s and Area Dean for Harlow, said, “After three years as Curate at St Stephen’s I am delighted that Sophie will now be moving to a neighbouring parish where she will begin her new role, but also continue as my colleague and friend.” Revd. Darren’s comments reflected the thoughts and prayers of the congregation very much.

The churches represented by the Six Villages Benefice are:

St Mary’s, Sheering; Holy Trinity, Hatfield Heath; St Mary’s, Hatfield Broad Oak; St John the Evangelist, Bush End; St Mary’s, Little Hallingbury and St Giles, Great Hallingbury, all of whom are part of the Chelmsford Diocese of the Church of England.

While I am in full admiration of Rev. Sophie Weller taking on these 6 parishes : It is a mammoth task for her and anyone by her side. She needs many people in the various established churches in support of so many issues which have to be dealt with. I must confess that I find this news shuddering; it is not a good sign for the well-being of the Christian church in this area. I wish her much strength and love of heart to share out.
