Veteran Conservative stands down as a Harlow and Essex councillor

VETERAN Harlow and Essex County councillor, Eddie Johnson has decided to call it a day after decades of distinguished civic service.

He is not seeking re-election for the Great Parndon ward in May. He has also decided to step down a year early from his county council seat of Harlow South East, thus forcing a by-election on May 2nd.

Eddie has alway been recognised as a “behind the scenes, getting things done” type of councillor. Eddie felt the key work was done by officers and members in committees more than “grandstanding” speeches in council meetings.

He was chair of Essex County Council in 2021.

This will now make for a very interesting by-election, that may well give a fairly accurate picture of the political temperature with a General Election looming.

In 2021, the Conservatives won with a thumping 1423 majority. In 2017, it was 973. However it was a lot closer in 2013, when the Tories just beat Labour by just 21 votes.

No candidates have been officially announced as yet.

Happy retirement Eddie. Working with you was always a pleasure. Harlow Politics will be all the poorer without your Common Sense. Best wishes.
