OF THE 101 candidates for the Harlow District Council elections in May, just one is standing as an Independent.

Gary Roberts is the Independent candidate for Church Langley South and Potter Street.

We caught up with Gary outside the corner Harlow Council Neighbourhood Office to discuss the issues that are close to his heart for a man who has lived in the Potter Street area for many many years.

The Harlow Alliance Party fully support Colin's campaign to get this office back in use. As the last Neighbourhood Manager, I know only to well how well this office was used on a daily basis, where residents could meet council officers face to face, where Councillors held their Ward surgeries, the local area committees and residents groups met and the public could meet police officers on a regular basis. Staff knew the are and many residents very well and the spirit of a community was kept alive. The end of neighbourhood working started with Labour in the summer of 2000, I was effectively sacked by the council. The Conservatives and Lib Dems came to power and offered a sham consultation on the matter, with the final closure in about 2002. There is I believe a covenant on the building which says it should be used for community use, the Conservatives are ignoring this and failing to consult with residents across the whole of the Potter street area for whom it was built.

Mr. Taylor, just to correct your posting: this is my campaign not "Colin's".

Sorry Gary! I have been following Colin's campaign about the allotments as well. Both of you have been hitting your head against the same brick wall. I wish you luck in the elections.
