News / Thu 18th Apr 2024 at 02:36pm

A SENIOR Harlow Conservative has been suspended following allegations that he made “Islamophobic comments” on social media.

Councillor James Leppard is candidate for Church Langley South and Potter Street. He is also the portfolio holder for finance. He has been a councillor since 2021.

He is up for re-election on May 2nd.

Hope Not Hate claimed that Conservative councillor James Leppard made a number of Islamophobic statements on Facebook, saying of Muslims that: “We really don’t need them here. They add nothing” and “endorsing” Islamophobic abuse of London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

The article goes on to reveal that prior to taking his seat on the council, James Leppard was the administrator of a small pro-Brexit Facebook group, ‘The Brexit Forum’, in which he discussed current affairs with a few hundred other Facebook users.

The full article can be seen below.

A spokesperson for the Harlow Conservatives said: ‘Harlow Conservatives condemn any form of racism.

“Mr Leppard was suspended as soon as the matter was brought to our attention and a formal investigation into the allegations has now been launched.”

The leader of Harlow Labour, Chris Vince has issued there following statement: He said: “Time and time again, we have seen the Conservatives have an issue selecting candidates who harbour racist views.

“I call upon the Conservative leader of Harlow to instantly withdraw their support for Cllr Leppard in the upcoming local elections.

“These view have no place in Harlow. We are an inclusive town with a long track record of welcoming people from all faiths and backgrounds”.

Mr Vince forgets the Labour Party are continually the focus of anti-semitic investigations - not that I’m condoning any islamophobic comments from Cllr Leppard if they are true - but people is glass houses shouldn’t throw stones

Brexit was really about immigration, including claims that millions of Turks, a largely muslim country, would come here when Turkey joined the EU. Of course, we have since seen that immigration continues under the tories, just not so much from the EU. I like to think I am a rapid non racist and woke person but even so I can see pressure on housing, schools and services with unfettered immigration. I haven't included the NHS because without past immigration I can't see that we would have a health service. I believe also that immigrants, being younger, make fewer demands on the NHS. The fact is, however, that many of the violent deaths in our near world on our side of the Atlantic are committed in the name of extremist Islam, or in the fight against extremist Islam. We have seen recently on the streets of London how many appear to sympathise with the extremist perspective. I once worked for a Jewish owned company, I asked the MD and the IT manager, both Jewish, how they met, their answer "guarding a synagogue overnight with baseball bats". This was London c40 years ago. Draw your own conclusions. Immigration does have benefits as well as difficulties, I love the multi culturalism of London. I wonder how many Spanish in the costa de sol have the same view of us Brits us Mr L appears to have of Muslims. It is all very difficult

Liam Dowers, if comparing it to Downing St and not a local level, yesterday was not a good news day for the Cons. The party does seem to attract quite a few degenerates, been a very long list of bad behaviour with the Tories. It's like watching 'In the thick of it'!

Brexit was all about big business lowering employment standards and their idea that the uk could become a low tax haven. It was levered on the issue immigration implying that if immigration were reduced all kinds of problems like the overload of the nhs (rather than a on tory policy of austerity) however, legal government approved immigration has soared because the uk government and universities cap and restricts the numbers of uk students they admit and had allowed business to recruit skilled workers from abroad rather than training uk student apprentices. We needed to expand education and training for overseas and uk students that provides us with a skilled uk workforce and helps secure markets overseas. The EU, one of the biggest markets in the world regards us as Perfidious Albion making Brexit a massive own goal.

Trace, to say that the tory party attracts quite a few degenerates is a stupid, and unfair, comment. They are a mix of people, albeit with similar views, in any group of people you get a few "bad uns".

Three candidates suspended in about as many years. Does the Tory party have a problem with selecting candidates appropriately?

If Mr Leppard is suspended, is he still a Conservative candidate in the upcoming local elections, or is he now an independent?

Politics Sucks.

Hope not Hate? A bunch of far left anti Brexit fanatics on witch-hunts against free speech and financed by enemies of this country. They are dangerous.

Have always found Councillor Leppard very sociable, respectful, well mannered and helpful. I suspect the involving of a dubious group like Hope not Hate was done by Labour to make mischief. Let's see what the enquiry throws up. All sounds far fetched to me. Notice nothing from this Hope Hate outfit about the shocking treatment of the Jewish man by the Met police. They seem to like Hamas terrorists mates.

Please...unbelievable comments supporting an alleged racist. What on earth is wrong with these people? I certainly wouldn't trust the Tories so called 'Investigation' into themselves. Anyone one allegedly holding these vile views have no place in public office. Thus isn't about political tribalism, this is about doing the right and decent thing... Go Now!
