Chelmsford Racecourse: preview and tips for Thursday’s six race evening card

Sport / Wed 8th May 2024 at 10:46am

THE latest midweek meeting at Chelmsford on the all-weather track arrives on Thursday with a six-race card on the Flat on offer for punters.

Racing gets underway at 6.30 with an 11-runner handicap for amateur jockeys and rounds off at 9.00 another handicap, this time in class six with nine runners.

Plenty are in with chances in the opening contest at 6.30 with £3,800 up for grabs to the winner. Amaysmont hasn’t won since 2022 but is expected to be bang in there this time around following a good second of 13 in a Salisbury handicap last time out. Alfred Cove has just the one win in 29 starts but he too was a fine runner up in a Wolverhampton handicap last time out and it’s between him and Amaysmont by the looks of the form.

Race two (7.00) is a maiden fillies’ stakes over the one mile distance and eight runners are set to head to the stalls for the start. D Flawless only found one to good on debut at Kempton in December for trainers John & Thady Gosden so has a good chance to go one better providing he runs well off a 155-day absence. The chief threat comes from Lakota Spirit, who has potential after finishing second in a Kempton maiden last month following an absence of seven months from the track.

The third race on the card (7.30) is for the stayers as eight runners will tackle the two-mile trip around Chelmsford. Wannabe Brave hasn’t been penalised too heavily by the handicapper following a win at Wolverhampton when last seen and is the selection for race three, with Easy Equation, a runner up last time out at Southwell, taken to fill second place.

The very promising Tabletalk looks the one to beat in race four (8.00) for trainer Tom Clover, third in a minor contest on debut 148 days ago and is stepping up in trip here and is preferred to Sant Alessio, second of 14 in a Kempton maiden six months ago who is also going over a longer distance on his return.

The penultimate race of the evening is the 1m2f handicap and eight runners will head to post for this one at 8.30. The African Queen landed a career-best when scoring a seven-runner handicap at Brighton earlier this month and can defy a penalty here to make it two wins from two. Blessed Boy can run her close on handicap debut, fifth of 12 in a minor event at Kempton when last seen having also won at Lingfield last October.

Finally, the card comes to a close with the nine-runner handicap over seven furlongs in class six (9.00) and the preference here is for Alexander James, third over course and distance a fortnight ago and holds claims to go a couple of spots better this time around.
