North Weald Airfield Market traffic: “We really need to be doing something, and it needs to be done now”

Politics / Thu 30th May 2024 at 03:45pm

AN urgent call for action has been made by North Weald Bassett Parish Council for Epping Forest District Council to find a solution to the ongoing traffic problems in and around North Weald when the airfield market is held.

Councillor Andy Tyler told the meeting Monday’s parish council meeting that on Saturday traffic queued along Epping Road from the Norwegian war memorial to Wellington Road and along Church Lane to the airfield.

He said: “It needs marshalling. It’s bumper to bumper. No emergency service would be able to get through as there’s nowhere for the (queuing) vehicles to go. It needs marshalling.”

Councillor Tyler added: “We really need to be doing something, and it needs to be done now. I think if it goes on all summer, there’s going to be an incident and people will take things into their own hands.

“There is a real growing anger about this. Harlow Garden Centre’s trade has fallen through the floor as well as Art Nursery. This (the market) isn’t bringing money to this area. Money is just being exchanged in this area.”

Councillor Paula Etherington highlighted the situation set to face North Weald villagers over the late May Bank Holiday weekend (May 25-27).

She highlighted the airfield market which will be held on the Saturday and Monday, with RideLondon-Essex coming through North Weald on the Sunday.

“Residents just cannot get out. It’s really getting to the point that peoples’ leisure time is being stopped.”

Parish council chairman councillor Alan Buckley said he would be meeting the airfield manager Darren Gooday and the airfield operator on Saturday to discuss the issue.

I fully agree I went to epping on bank holiday Monday and the traffic was horrendous most going to North Weald market

I have a great granddaughter who participates in a Gymnastics Class which is held opposite the Market - and many times she arrives late for her class due to the very heavy traffic.

Why can't a another entrance be built, when the air ambulance critical care team are dispatched by car they lose valuable time driving from base along canes Lane just to get to the M11 roundabout, many times I've seen it making its way along the 414 and up the M11, something can be done to alleviate both problems?

Unless multiple entrances & exits are made available, the Market should be suspended until correct infrastructure is in place to deal with the volume of traffic, Canes Lane, Epping New Road and 414 just become gridlocked all day making it a misery for locals and local businesses.

That’s life you drive through London and a mile can take you 2 hours driving on the m25 you can sit in gost traffic jams for 3 hours.. instead off moaning about traffic why don’t you concentrate on the amount off knife crime in Harlow kids from the age off 12 carrying blades. Kids killing each other because they from a different postcode or drug gangs making kids be runners selling crack coke weed etc I suppose it’s easier to ignore that and moan about traffic jams that happen once a week on the odd bank holiday twice a week.

It’s not that big of a deal when you consider the benefits to the local community. More efforts needs to go towards how the air field can continue to be relevant to the local residents going forward.

Sounds like this guy is laying down the grounds to try and get the market shutdown or relocated, ruining one of the very few markets this country has running. People from across the country, let alone county come to North Weald for the market, you should be embracing that, not looking for a way to moan about it all

I travel regularly from orpington to North weald on a market day its a fantastic place to visit...but mainly there are so few markets of that size around anymore...every lazy sod wants to shop online..embrace the market people while you still can.

@ Colin, "us" locals aren't saying close it down, all we are asking is for more entrances and exits to allow a more freely flowing traffic. Thus allowing us local to be able to go Harlow or M11. If my partner goes into labour on a Saturday, and the birth is at risk of she doesn't get to hospital in good time. Which means if I can't get to a hospital, how can a ambulance or a fire truck get into north weald if there stuck in traffic.
