Man slashed police officer in the neck with glass and “almost killed them” but is deemed unfit to stand trial

Crime / Tue 4th Jun 2024 at 09:09am

A MAN has been found to have carried out the act of almost killing a police officer with a piece of broken glass in Harlow.

Officers were called to the area of Station Approach at around 4pm on 7 September 2022 to assist with a missing persons enquiry relating to 23-year-old Ahmed Poka.

Once at the scene, an officer approached Poka, who responded by slashing the officer across the jaw and neck with a piece of glass causing a serious injury.

Poka was deemed unfit to stand trial at Chelmsford Crown Court, after he was charged with attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon.

He instead faced a trial of facts, held in cases where a defendant is not fit to enter a plea.

On Monday 3 June 2024, after hearing the key evidence of the case, a jury came to the decision within 28 minutes that Poka carried out the act.

Poka will remain in custody until a further hearing to decide the outcome, on a date to be set.
