Controversial Burnt Mill flats development now available to rent
News / Tue 17th Dec 2024 at 10:09am
THE FLATS near the Harlow Railway Station roundabout are now being advertised for rent.

Many readers will have followed the stories regarding what people have referred to as Burnt Mill Flats (but are officially known as Millbrook House) since Conservative-led Harlow Council made the decision to purchase the flats.
Back in December 2023, YH reported that the 172 flats were set to be sold to Newham Council.

There have been a number of twists and turns along the way but council leader Dan Swords has always been confident that the flats bought by Harlow Council would be available for rent.
The adverts for the one and two-bedroomed apartments went up at the weekend.

We have approached Harlow Council for comment.

Dan swords, how many going to Harlow people.??? Was this cash bought, or a loan.??? You have had months to answer theses questions..
I thought these were going to be for Harlow residents on the council waiting list?? How is this going to help get the waiting list down?
Homes for Harlow people: If you have between £1,300 and £1,550 per calendar month. If not they go on the open market. How many are for those on the council's housing needs register?
I doubt that the council could have afforded to buy this if it was all going to be for social housing. While I imagine there will maybe be a token amount given over to the waiting list it was probably bought more to avoid it becoming another Terminus House and they have to rent most of it out to pay back the costs. £1,650 a month for such a tiny apartment, though. No thanks.
I thought these flats was for local residents? Another slap in the face for locals🤬

The council only help their self f*** the residents.
Im sorry but this is a smack in face to Harlow very own waiting lists! these will only be affordable to people who dont pay any rent and are on social benefits and we know who they are! To be honest I was very happy when the big announcement came regarding Harlow people getting these flats and yet again one big lie!
I recall in March's Your Harlow the council said "All 172 homes will be available to anyone who lives in Harlow. Thirty percent of homes (52 apartments), which is three times more than the original planning approval, will be allocated to Harlow families on the Housing Needs Register at affordable rent levels (at least 20% below market rent)" Is that still the case? Sadly what is more likely is investors will buy many of the flats and then rent them out to people on benefit's from outside Harlow, mostly the London overspill where council's like Newham can simply ship them out to Harlow and pay rents cheaper than those in London. This would mean a tower block with 172 homes and owned by the council, will see most on the Harlow housing list, ineligable. As the council actually owns it (as been claimed) They could have used these homes for those only on the Harlow List. A bit of an own goal really.
It's a shame if it's not every flat going to those on the local housing waiting list, but it's still money well spent/borrowed if it helps prevent another Terminus House nightmare. There's no Council self-interest in this decision.
I’d rather it sat empty than be full of the people Newham don’t want in their borough, you’d all be moaning if that was the case, to many of these terminus house type dwellings, being occupied by people with no connection to Harlow
Seamus if you had read the council statement properly you would see that the flats are not for sale (rent only) so can not be bought by investors to rent out for personal gain !!
John c I have read the council statement which is why the questions were asked. on first reading it gives that impression of appartments for rent only but this is Harlow council we are talking about.. Unless the builder themselves owns the appartments, someone has indeed bought them which is why some have been seeking clarification on the actual owner of the apartments. Perhaps you know the owner John who is now renting out the 120 appartments not allocated to the social housing stock but renting them out at market prices?? With Harlow council under Dan Swords, the key is not what they say but what they don't say and refuse to say is where the truth lies.
The flats have still not yet been occupied which is very interesting. Does anyone have any idea what is going on?
