Harlow bin crews struggle to finish collections due to heat

News / Mon 18th Jul 2022 at 03:56pm

VEOILA bin crews have been working hard today in the heat to empty as many bins as possible.

Due to the rising temperatures, not all collections could be completed.

The council would like to thank the bin crews for their work today.

There is a catch-up plan in place. If your bins were not emptied, please continue to put them out and they will be collected.

The council is sorry for the disruption, and it thanks residents for their patience and understanding.

Sorry but I don’t agree. Do you see bin collections in Spain during the day they are done overnight or early morning. In this heat you could literally die. My thanks to the refuse collectors for even trying to collect and I expect Veolia will catch up with collections later in the week.

Oh Claire M do you work outside in this heat? Have you been picking up peoples bins all day in this heat?? NO!!! So what if your a carer does that make you special? Do people working in a hospital a shop an office any different to you??? NO! People were advised to stay in yesterday as it was a red alert, life threatening heat. Over 12 people died yesterday. This country isn’t used to this heat!!! But it’s ok you expect the bin men to carry on. What about builders? Roofers? If it was your partner/ husband / dad/ brother etc it would be a whole different comment you would be putting up and blaming Harlow council. If you have kids would it be ok for them to go out yesterday? Again NO!!! If one of them refuse workers passed away from doing their job , you would have a right moan. Your a joke. Well done refuse collectors for trying to get round as many peoples properties as possible in this heat! Well done Harlow council for putting your staff first.

Some of the schools shutting yesterday and child care facilities should they of stayed open? The teachers/ nursery staff should of done their jobs. I mean it’s only summer as you all say!!! All the comments above moaning you all go out and do their jobs. Then moan after you have experienced it yourself. If your all so worried about your bins dispose of them yourselves.

Everyone's jobs are adaptable, and that includes dustmen. Its not like we have not had warning of this and alternative plans could have been put in place. Start early, collect in the evening or even overnight collections. We are only talking of a 2-3 day period and I'm sure there was time to put this in place. Our hospital staff do not all have air conditioning, but they carry on. Our fire, police and ambulance staff, they carry on. Many occupations adapt and carry on. Yesterday I saw a funeral go past, the staff in their suits showing dignity and respect, they carry on. I remember a time when the dustmen would come to the house with a bin on their shoulder, empty your bin into that and return to the cart and empty it. Then I would have had sympathy, but the guys today wheel the bin to the cart, let the mechanical system empty it, then they wheel it back. So my advice would be, Dustmen, its your job so get on with it, wear a hat, sunscreen and cool clothing. Harlow council, don't just take the easy option, support your staff, provide them with plenty of bottles of water to keep them hydrated, and work with them to change their hours for a couple of days to make it more comfortable for them. Finally, when the time comes to play catch up, I presume this will be done with no extra pay, given the fact that time off has already been taken to finish early? or will this be done by paying overtime? So come on Dustmen and Harlow Council, get a grip and do what everyone else is doing and DEAL WITH IT!
