HTS, Harlow’s environmental and property maintenance service, held a special morning for the Harlow Wombles, for playing their part in HTS once again winning a Green Apple Award.
The Harlow Wombles are civic minded residents who either as groups such as the Potter Street Wombles or individuals, pick up litter across the town.
HTS supply them with bags and a pick up stick and away they go.
The Wombles are also the eyes and ears of HTS when it comes to fly tipping and allow HTS to clean up fly tipping in remarkably quick time.
Health and Safety manager, Stella Dunlop and colleagues invited the Wombles to their base off Edinburgh Way for a tour and a lunch.
The portfolio holder for environment, cllr Nicky Purse was also there and she thanked the Wombles for all their support and being a key part of the town.
Ms Dunlop’s speech to the Wombles is below.
The Green Apple Awards is an international, annual campaign to recognise and reward environmental best practice.
The Green Apple Environment Awards were launched in 1994 by The Green Organisation and have become well established as one of the most popular environmental campaigns in the world and are supported by the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Chartered Institution for Wastes Management and other independent bodies.
HTS (Property and Environment) Limited is a company set up by Harlow Council to provide environmental and property maintenance services.
It is great that people with time on their hands do stuff like this, my friends and I also do our bit. There is a bit of a puzzle however, the council support litter picking but if you try and keep council land tidy they come down on you like a ton of bricks. Perhaps some one can explain why.
Get people on benefits to do this as well, no reason why they shouldn't earn their keep.
The welfare benefits was set up to prevent people becoming destitute. Part of the contract with the people for suffering anotber World War was that those who survived it would not have to suffer the grinding poverty of the 1930s. The welfare system was designed to take money off people when in work and pay out when they cannot get a job or unable to due to ill-health. Many families claiming benefits actually have family members in work. This goes to show how poor wages are in this country. The benefits paid in the UK are amongst the worst in Western Europe and overlooks the colossal amount that goes unclaimed. There are more than enough politicians looking for an easy photo opportunity to do litter picking without forcing people already under the cosh to do it. By all means ask them to volunteer, but don't force them because that makes Britain look more like some tinpot third world dictatorship than a member of the top ten largest economies in the world.
Well done to all these environment and community minded people tidying up after the dirty "tossers" of Harlow have made a complete mess of the place. Its just as easy to put your drink can or crisp packet in your pocket and take it home for proper disposal rather than tossing it for someone else to tidy up.
