Letter to Editor: On the government cancelling elections

Dear Editor,
The Government is cancelling local elections for over FIVE MILLION voters. They won’t have the chance to hold their councils or their councillors to account. They won’t have any say on the biggest changes to local democracy in 50 years.

The Government claims that it’s just a delay for one year, but it’s widely predicted that it will be two or three years until council re-organisation is complete.
That’s too long to go without a say. Democracy delayed is democracy denied.
The Government should think again and voters should get to exercise their right to vote this May as planned.
Yours Sincerely,
Pamela Walker
This is an appalling attempt to suppress our ability to register our disapproval of the current government. They know they will lose every council seat they have.
Cancelling local elections is as anti democratic as Taxation without Representation: guess we could all stop paying all of our Council tax or tip tea into Boston Harbour!! Must be some historical legal and constitutional basis upon which to challenge this decision! Any lawyers out there?
The authoritarian instincts of Sir Keir Starmer shine through this cancellation of elections. The failure of Labour councillors around the country to stand up to Starmer makes them equally guilty of anti-democratic policies.
Forgive me if I am wrong but there was no local elections this year as Harlow Council voted to extend the period between elections before the General election.
James, there are no Harlow Council elections this year because one year in every four there are no elections for Harlow Council seats. this article refers to the county elections which have been cancelled across the whole county.
They are trying to create a situation whereby your voice will no longer be heard. Firstly they don’t like the idea that they (Labour) could possibly lose big in a democratically held election of councillors, so they want a situation that alters that, it’s called labour democracy, they want there own people in there, not your choice of councillor. Creating a Labour only totalitarian state.
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't ECC run by the Tories? And didn't they cancel the County Council elections? Not the Government. Am I also thinking that maybe it was cancelled for fear of Reform? Just asking.
It's quite Obvious why the local Elections are not going ahead this year.. The government know that reform will win. The democratic right of the voter has been delayed. For one, Two, possibly even 3 years. We will not know for sure due to the endless lies they tell us. It's Quite obvious that the conservatives and labour are running scared because they know that reform are set to win hands down. When the peoples right to have their say and right to vote is removed or delayed we know that democracy is being replaced with a dictatorship.
