Harlow Conservative highly critical of Chancellor’s Spring Statement

News / Thu 27th Mar 2025 at 07:14am

A SENIOR Harlow Conservative councillor has issued his response to the Labour chancellor’s Spring Statement.

Old Harlow councillor Joel Charles has expressed the following concerns:

1.The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) has downgraded its growth prediction for the economy, halving the forecast this year.

    2. Market expectation is higher interest rates, lower business and consumer confidence, and depressed growth, leaving the Government’s economic strategy in tatters. The increased uncertainty, with inflation twice the level this year than was forecast in 2024, will make the Government’s job even harder and limit the ability to improve the country’s future economic outlook.

    3. There is also increased labour market uncertainty, with vacancies falling and the unemployment rate expected to rise this year.

    4. Servicing the cost of the national debt is becoming more challenging. Debt interest is expected to increase further, according to the OBR.

    5. Spending cuts are a direct result of the poor economic stewardship under the current Labour Government.

Cllr Joel Charles said: “The Chancellor has boxed herself into a corner. Weaker growth this year will put increasing pressure on the Government to change course. Rachel Reeves has chosen to deliver an Emergency Budget because her economic policies are making the country poorer. Her statement today provided little reassurance.

“There is no respite for many people in our country who have already fallen victim to Labour’s mismanagement. The Chancellor’s Emergency Budget statement signalled no relief for disabled people, farmers, pensioners or business owners. Increased unemployment will potentially hamper economic growth for years to come. Labour’s jobs tax, the increase in employers’ National Insurance contributions, will lead to fewer employment opportunities. Charities, schools and key parts of the private sector, including retail businesses, have all said that they now plan to make difficult decisions because of the jobs tax.

“Inflation running at twice the level this year than previously forecast inevitably means Harlow residents will pay more for essentials like food. Borrowing will also be more expensive, providing less scope for investment in public services. The Government is steering the economy in the wrong direction and hardworking people are going to pay the price.”

Hypocrisy is rife in today's politics and the only people to suffer in Harlow, as in the country, is the disabled, ill, young and old after this Spring statement. So while national and local politicians get a pay rise, millions will fall into the poverty trap continuing the policies of the last decade or more. The politicians have made the word, "change" linked to something nasty and indeed unchangeable. Anyone got a spare ticket to Vancouver this October?

This shower have left genuinely disabled people terrified and yet our town has changed beyond recognition by mass influx of people from outside the area. How can this be allowed with the most vulnerable people in society paying the price. How is this benefitting the economy ? Why are the elderly sick and disabled being targeted to cover the cost ? Anyone who is genuine and those who support them know how incredibly difficult it is to get disability benefits, and where are all these jobs that are well paid and secure that sick and disabled people are supposed to do. Who is going to employ sick and disabled people, let alone on a decent wage. This is far worse than anything the tories ever dreamt up. Elderly and now the sick and disabled. Just wow

Balancing there shocking books , on the back of the vulnerable. It's shocking. It's disgraceful. It's disgusting. It's every thing , a government SHOULD NOT BE DOING. SHAME ON THEM.

After 14 years of a disastrous Conservative Government, millions of people voted labour in the hope that things would get better, Just nine months on, most must surely feel very disappointed about the actions of this Labour government. If what they have done since being elected was carried out by the Conservatives there would be a massive hue and cry. It just shows that these two Parties are as bad as each other.

Ha Ha , Harlow conservatives distanced themselves from their own party at last year's local elections. Had they stood up to Putin in 2014 the subsequent consequences could have been far better. Likewise, this is the party that gave us Brexit (during the covid pandemic for goodness sake), what is it 4 or 5% adverse effect on the economy. They had 14 years to create European security, now labour has to lead the way. The civil service expanded as did people on benefits. Why were these issues not addressed. Labour has a lot to deal with, it is sad that the weakest people are in the firing line but then again why should benefits be a right. We probably all know of, or hear of people who never work. I would like to see savings taxed to encourage spending, an expansion of the council tax bands so people with big houses pay more, and perhaps a higher income tax on very high earners but, of course, the tories would be up in arms over such increase. Joel mentions farmers yet how come milk is so cheap and dairy farms closing. I guess there is no easy answer but the news today about Next shows that there are more positive sides.

The reality is we are still having the hangover from the pandemic. Printing lots of money and giving it away in handouts while at the same time shutting businesses for the best part of a year was always going to end badly for everyone. Since the pandemic started our government has managed to make the worst decisions at every opportunity. Take the last budget for example, the taxes they have imposed on private sector businesses are effectively another business expense, which many cannot afford so confidence has droppped and the tax revenues with it. They have now run out of money and that means the poor and sick suffer. They would have done better to increase income and corporation tax as this comes out of earnings and profit, which I am sure most people would have put up with

Peter. You say tories did not stand up to Putin. The labour party cannot even stand up to Trump, Putins poodle. Also the pay rises have gone to the mp,s and their puppet masters the Unions, that's where my winter fuel allowance when. They must have needed it.more than me , still you can warm up by shivering as I do
