IKEA is coming to Harlow! Delight at ‘securing even more investment for Harlow’ with store to open later this year

Business / Tue 1st Apr 2025 at 10:50am

IKEA has announced that they will be opening a Harlow store in the former Homebase store on Edinburgh Way. The Harlow Conservatives Leader, Dan Swords, says they are on a mission to ‘secure investment for Harlow’s future’ and that this is ‘yet more proof we are delivering’.

The announcement follows a string of recent announcements about multi-million investments into Harlow such as the £28 million David Lloyd.

The new store is set to open later this year featuring IKEA’s famous home furnishing inspiration, market hall and bespoke planning services, the store will provide the classic IKEA experience which customers know and love, on a smaller scale.

It will also offer a compact on-the-go food menu for customers to take away – where fans can still expect IKEA’s much-loved meatballs.

Commenting on the announcement, Dan Swords, Leader of Harlow Conservatives said: “We are on a mission to secure investment for Harlow’s future and we are delivering. IKEA is a huge brand which will bring so much to town and it is yet more proof that the work we are doing is bearing fruit.

“From rebuilding the town centre to freezing your council tax, from building to council homes to securing multi-million pound investments the Harlow Conservatives are transforming our town.”

Peter Jelkeby, IKEA UK and Ireland CEO, said: “We know many people want to shop with IKEA but in some instances, we are just too far away. That’s why we are strategically expanding our UK footprint, with the aim of showing up in convenient, accessible locations for our customers.

“Centrally located in retail parks, our new stores mark a major step forward in our expansion plan, making it easier than ever for customers in these areas to shop with us.”

Located in busy retail parks, such as Harlow’s, the stores are the latest in a series of smaller formats which IKEA is opening in the UK.

They are announced ahead of the opening of IKEA’s highly anticipated store on London’s Oxford Street this spring, with the retailer set to open another city centre store in Brighton this year.

Mr Jelkeby added: “Harlow, Chester and Norwich have long been areas of interest to us, and we’re looking forward to bringing the very best of the IKEA experience in a refreshingly compact format to these communities later this year.”

The opening dates for the IKEA stores are yet to be announced. They will join IKEA’s existing portfolio of 21 full IKEA stores in the UK.

This is very positive news along with other quality entrants such as Waterstones and David Lloyd, and it is likely more will follow. These companies do not make such investments without painstaking research. It seems that the tide of decline is finally turning as the Town Centre is regenerated. These quality stores and facilities provide more choice to residents and will attract people to the town, boosting the local economy and giving people more reason to shop and spend on leisure here rather than venturing to other locations. Keep up the good work, Harlow Council.

Good news, need something to attract people here, start heading there about half hour before opening time, should get there before they close. Traffic is already a nightmare round there, can't see it getting any better.

I would have preferred the return of a Marks & Spencers Food Hall. IKEA will only appeal to the students in the town.

A lot of you gave Dan slack but he's done well. Harlow wasn't in a great position to begin with. He's made significant improvements

Really good news and will attract people into the town. We'll have to speculate about alternative town sites for M&S now....

In reply to Mr Grumpy. No more being stuck in traffic jams at Lakeside? No, you'll be stuck in traffic jams in Harlow instead.

They’ll need to do something with the road down there because it’ll be absolute carnage trying to go out onto the main road again, maybe even trying to get into that industrial estate

Great news, well done Harlow council. Couple of negative comments above... All I can say is stop bloody moaning and celebrate the good news.

Great News.. but this has nothing to do with Dan Swords as leader of Harlow Council, they have played no part in getting this international company to invest in this town. He has jumped on the politics band wagon making out the Conservatives are responsible for this, when they are NOT. On the upside it's great news for Harlow. Also traffic...... if you are sitting in traffic you then you are the traffic!

Oh good, we need another popular shop there to f@#!K the traffic up even more. Road improvements on the way aswell?

It will be great news for those who'd like to go to Ikea but feel travelling to Lakeside or Wembley is too far. The downside is, most people know of the gridlock that happens down templefields and this will not improve with Ikea's addition. Any news on the Riverway/Cambridge road closure being opened?? As to M&S, the homebase building is far too big for their declared wants of food, underwear and small selected items. A better site for M&S would be the empty mothercare store but divided in two. As to the want of Ikea by councillor Swords, the extra vehicle traffic coming into Harlow, shows Harlow councils net zero virtue signalling statement recently announced, is just that.

Great news but the roads can't take the extra traffic. Plus no bus service at all in one of the most busiest roads in harlow ..why is this , i know because the buses would cause so much more traffic by stopping

Hopefully M and S or Waitrose take over the old Mothercare site. Certainly we don't need anymore stores packed with Chinese tat like B and M or Poundland.

It's good that IKEA is coming. However, like all the large stores opening, I hope Harlow Council do their homework first re traffic flow. Currently, on a weekend, Howard Way and Edinburgh Way are both at a standstill.

Great news but I have to correct Dan on something. Our council tax has not been frozen. Your portion might have been but mine has increased by £11 per month. So let’s get our facts right. I know politicians find that pretty hard lately.

Educating people on how to drive and give way in traffic would help. Too many entitled people who think they don't need to que.....just cut in.
