Harlow Junior Parkrun celebrates its ninth birthday

Athletics / Mon 4th Aug 2025 at 10:01am

HARLOW Junior parkrun has just celebrated its ninth birthday.

The 2k run for participants aged 5-14 is held at the Junior Showground area every Sunday morning at 9am.

Harlow junior parkrun started on 24th July 2016, before a lot of the athletes who took part yesterday were even born!

At the first event, 110 children took part and yesterday saw 79 incredible athletes running or walking around the Showground Field.

In the last nine years over 2206 different children have crossed the finish line almost 18,000 times between them.

Over 420 volunteers have supported and cheered them on.

These include a core team of volunteers, who, along with their families make sure the event goes ahead safely each week.

Catherine Penketh, Event Director said: “We have children from 4 to 14 years of age, first timers to children with over 300 junior parkruns under their belts and super speedy sprinters to children who enjoy a more leisurely stroll and chat with their friends.

“We welcome them all, and everyone in between!!”
