Chelmsford Racecourse preview: Sunday 8th February

Sport / Sun 8th Feb 2026 at 10:43am

THERE’S more all-weather racing at Chelmsford on Sunday afternoon, with seven races across the card; five handicaps, a maiden and a classified stakes race.

Read on for a preview of the Warwick card, brought to you by Betfair

Up first is a three-year-olds’ mile handicap (1.37). Aneirin’s Sword looks to have a good chance from the inside draw and represents a stable in good form, but Bergamo Gold could be well placed in the handicap considering that he was hampered when going well last time out on handicap debut. She could be the winner for Charlie Johnston today.

Next is a mile maiden (2.07). Immediate Jewel and Picture Palace are the newcomers, with the latter the standout on pedigree. Given over a stone by four-year-old Shafdar, it looks easy enough to side with the well-related debutant, who makes a start for a stable doing well.

Race three is a seven-furlong handicap (2.37). Stuart Williams’ Invincible Melody could be at a winnable mark now, as could Pickering Castle for David Simcock and Charlie Johnston’s Sanditon, so this could be a competitive race. The step back up to this trip, though, looks a positive for Invincible Melody who could be the choice here.

The classified stakes race is next, run over 10 furlongs (3.07). Prince Hector was only beaten a neck over course and distance last time and could go well again, but the consistent Monks Mead could be a safer option given his two close recent runs at Lingfield. If he can maintain that form, he has a big chance for trainer Mark Usher.

Next we have a 10-furlong handicap (3.37). Harlington won his latest start for trainer Charlie Clover, and has risen accordingly in the weights. Richard Hannon’s Gennadius should benefit from the step up in trip here, being bred to go best over trips in excess of a mile. If taking to it, he could be at a good point in the handicap.

Second to last is a six-furlong handicap (4.07). Marcus, ridden by Rob Hornby, should have a fair chance here from stall four and might appreciate the extra furlong here, while Gundogan can get involved too. Topweight Respectable Jack could run a good race too, but Marcus looks the best value option.
Last of all is a handicap over a mile and six furlongs (4.37). Mio Amico won his latest start under seven-pound claimer Kyle McHugh, and has been penalised three pounds since, so may still have a chance of placing. Tuba should go well for Fergal O’Brien, but it might be worth backing Mio Amico to perform again due to his good draw.
