THE Downs Primary School and Nursery in Harlow are embracing their artistic side this summer as they take part in the Lions on the Loose Art Trail, a community-wide initiative raising funds for St Clare Hospice.

As part of the project, the school will design and decorate its own lion sculpture, joining a trail of vibrant, colourful lion artworks displayed across the area to support the hospice.

Pupils are being encouraged to base their designs around the academy’s core values: Respect, Resilience, Courage, Kindness, and Responsibility.

Children can submit as many designs as they like, with a small £2 donation per entry contributing directly to the fundraising effort.

Headteacher Rob Calderwood said:

“This project offers our pupils a fantastic opportunity to actively support a vital local cause. Not only does it give them the chance to express their creativity, but it also helps them understand the value of community, compassion, and giving back. Every design submitted makes a real difference to St Clare Hospice, helping to fund the incredible care and support they provide to local families. Seeing our children so engaged, proud of their work, and motivated to contribute is truly inspiring, and it’s fantastic that the whole school community can come together for such a meaningful cause.”

Anyone wishing to support the school’s fundraising efforts can donate via their JustGiving page:
