Charles Kao students go nuclear to build a kit car
Education: Secondary / Mon 25th May 2015 at 10:13am
A GROUP of students at Sir Charles Kao UTC ran in the Nuclear Races in Brentwood to raise funds to build a kit car.
A team of 12 students and staff members from Sir Charles Kao UTC ran the 6km assault course in Brentwood, in order to raise the required £12,600 to buy the kit.
Their first project will be a Westfield Mega-s2000 and once completed will be sold on to purchase another kit. The team consists of students from both year 10 and 12, who have joined together in creating a car club to manage the project.
By participating in the car club, students will learn about all the components of a vehicle, enabling them to be better equipped for when they begin driving and owning a car. They will understand the limitations of a vehicle which will be a preventative measure against any incidents that will harm the vehicle or themselves.
Stephen Holmes, Engineering Technician of Sir Charles Kao UTC, who assists with the car club said:
“The car club has been something that students have engaged with from day one. They have been really motivated in trying to get the project off the ground and their participation in the Nuclear Races is a sign of how dedicated they are. The event is in their own time on a Sunday and the effort required to complete the assault course is similar to completing a marathon”
Michael McKeaveney, Principal of Sir Charles Kao UTC said:
“This exciting project exemplifies the exciting and innovative approach to education we deliver here at Sir Charles Kao UTC. I am thrilled to be leading a group of such dedicated and talented students, with a strong commitment to learning. We are accepting late applications for students to join us in September 2015, so if you know of any students with a passion for STEM subjects, please get in touch.”
You can donate to the car club by texting SCKU23 followed by your donation amount to 70070 or by handing in money to the school reception.
