John OtwayTHIS July, get ready to welcome “rock ‘n’ roll’s greatest failure”, John Otway to Bishop’s Stortford!
The rock veteran Otway who dubbed himself “rock ‘n’ roll’s greatest failure” after many unsuccessful attempts to produce a second hit single to follow his 1977 classic (Cor Baby, That’s) Really Free with Wild Willy Barrett, is coming to the Bishop’s Stortford Theatre at the Rhodes Arts Complex on the 4th July.

Otway however, did have another hit a mere quarter century later, when he was back on Top of  The Pops with the wonderful disco pastiche, ‘Bunsen Burner’ and back in the charts as a birthday present from his adoring and patient fans.

More recently, his “Beware Of The Flowers Cause I’m Sure They’re Going To Get You Yeah” voted the seventh greatest lyric of all time in a BBC poll.

And if that wasn’t enough, the spectacular failure of his round-the-world tour was just one of the many incidents to be featured in his rockumentary “Otway The Movie – Rock ‘n’ Roll’s Greatest Failure” which played in cinema houses and film festivals across the UK and is now available on DVD.
Expect madcap mayhem and some scintillating stunts from a man old enough to know better…..and also to be surprised at just what a showman and musician really lies underneath the tomfoolery.

‘He’s a cabaret act masquerading as a rock act. He is gleeful, anecdotal, funny and life-enhancing.’
Canterbury Fayre Review.

John Otway and the Big Band, with support from Murray Torkildsen will be at Rhodes Arts Complex on the 4th July at 8pm. Tickets are £13 in advance and £15 on the door. To book, call the Box Office on 01279 710 200 or go online at www.rhodesbishopsstortford.org.uk.
